After installing or after a reboot, IS2009 dies soon after, there is no longer a protection center in the system tray and Outlook 2003 can no longer send/receive email. If I reboot, it is fine and Outlook is working again for about 1 hr and then IS 2009 dies or is killed by something and then outlook loses ability to connect to pop server. Running XP, latest SP.

Event viewer shows following.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7034
Date: 10/7/2008
Time: 3:23:18 AM
User: N/A
Computer: PHIL
Description:
The Norton Internet Security service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 3 time(s).

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

philt56,

Do you get a popup like this one?

It would say "Symantec Service Framework" instead of the example application in the screen shot.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike

No, I don't see any pop ups from Windows that shows it crashed. From a user point of view, it is silent other than I don't see it in the system tray anymore and Outlook gives me errors that it can't connect. Then I dug into the event viewer but than seems pretty lame; no data to say why it was terminated.

Is there anywhere else I can look for log info?

thanks!

Phil

Message Edited by philt56 on 10-07-2008 10:54 AM

Message Edited by philt56 on 10-07-2008 10:55 AM

Phil,

The only other place you can look is also in the Event Viewer (where you got the initial information for your post). Just check under the "Application" logs instead of the "System" logs. Here's a few screen shots of the type of info that may be available. If you find something like this, please copy and paste it here as you did before.

Thanks,

Mike

Ok, the IS iconis in the systray and says everything is fine, but my email is dead again. I was on chat with a tech and he assured me that he fixed the problem but it is still here.

[8:00 PM] Phil says: reboot clears things up but this is not a permanaent solution!

Thanks for helping:

1) Do you have any other security program running in realtime; antivirus, antispyware, etc.?

I think Windows Defender is on but didn't see any alerts; I have disabled it now,

2) Are there any other programs running that might be scheduled to run after 1 hour - backup program, etc.?

Not that I'm aware of, not sure how to check?

3) Are there any entries in your NIS Security History that might give a clue?

I see entries after the last email was downloaded (11:15pm) like firewall configuration updated, intrusion prevention engine updated... I exported the history. Want me to send it somewhere?

4) How long has NIS 2009 been installed and have you performed a manual "Run Live Update" and have you performed a Full System Scan?

It's been installed a few days. I did Live Update immediately. Didn't do a full scan, running it now

5) Have you run the automated scan of your NIS2009 product through "Help & Support" > "One Click Support" > "Begin Support Session?

yes, it doesn't find anything, suggests to turn off firewall, which doesn't help, then I get sent to chat room.

My IS icon in the systray went away again. Went to services and the IS service was not on; so I restarted it and could open it again, but no email.

Only other thing is I had Systemworks installed for Utilities and Ghost besides IS 2008. When 2009 installed, it uninstalled 2008. I saw Systemworks complained that I had no antivirus (see that was a known issue now). So I uninstalled it too and also Ghost 12.0. Then reinstalled IS2009. I think I had a power hit during the restart after the initial install of 2009 but I uninstalled an reinstalled and it seemed clean. So right now IS 2009 is the only Norton product installed.

I gave up and went back to IS 2008. email is fine now. One of the chat techs said I could renew 2008 with 2009 product key but I don't see how? It never prompted me for one, I assume because it's in the registry somewhere and the uninstall didn' take it out. Can anyone help?

I would recommend waiting until the current NIS 2008 registration is near the end of its subscription preion, then applying the new key. You can do this by going to Help & Support and clicking Activation. Then, enter your new key. Thanks!

I have a very similar problem. I am running Vista & NIS 2009.

NIS stops running after a short while and I can't send or receive email from outlook. After reboot all is well but then again, after about 20 minutes, NIS stop running and no email...
I am not using eny other security apps.In event viewer I see this: The Norton Internet Security service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 3 time(s).

Neil,

In order to isolate the exact cause of the problem you have encountered, can you please perform the following steps. Note this applies to Windows Vista only.

1) Open Control Panel, click on "System and Maintenance", then on "Problem Reports and Solutions"

2) Find any instances of "Symantec Service Framework" in the list

3) Double click an entry

3) At the bottom left corner, there is a link that says "Copy to Clipboard" - click this link.

4) Send me a "Private Message" or reply to this thread and paste in the details.

Also, an update for NIS/NAV 2009 was released yesterday which resolves several of these types of errors. You may want to run LiveUpdate to get the latest version. Please see Tim's post for the details on the update.

Regards,

Mike

Hi Mike, thanks for the prompt reply

Please note i run a full disc scan and it seems, though it's to early to conclude, that the scan fixed the problem

This is the entry text:

Product
Symantec Service Framework

Problem
Stopped working

Date
12/11/2008 07:05

Status
Report Sent

Problem signature
Problem Event Name: InPageCoFire
Error Status Code: c000009c
Faulting Media Type: 00000003
Damaged file name: explorer.exe
OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1037
Additional Information 1: 06b2
Additional Information 2: 63291592dbf6c08ad850526800afe1e2
Additional Information 3: bd49
Additional Information 4: 3f47631e49b32ed52bd239b252b2c6a4

Extra information about the problem
Bucket ID: 5026128

Neil,

I don't have access to that specific error bucket on Windows Error Reporting, likely because its not filed under something for Symantec.

Unfortunately, the error code (0xC000009C) translates to the slightly less cryptic STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR.

I found a KB article after a Google search for the error code above:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884070

It appears to be an issue with the disc, perhaps a bad sector, though I can't say for sure. Running chkdsk as mentioned in the KB article should help.

Regards,

Mike
