Hi dickevans & huwyngr,

I overlooked the error code "0x800704cf" when unable to connect to other pcs. I googled it and found a solution:

uninstall "file & printer sharing" for the network adapter, and reinstall it.

Seems like the worm did something to it. I'm now able to view others and vice-versa! Yay!

And just for some extra knowledge-sharing, there was another non-malware cause that could disrupt file & printer sharing:

The hundreds of "Microsoft 6to4 Adapter" created & hidden in Network adapters of Device Manager. Deleting these worked for some people.

My bad for an important oversight...

Hi anyone who can help, especially Symantec staff!

After removing W32.SillyFDC recently (link below), I am now unable to use my W7 laptop to view other pcs (XP & W7) on my network. I can still connect to the internet like normal, just that I didn't realise this hidden issue.

I can ping them, and they show up on NIS's network map. They just don't show up on explorer, and I can't connect by typing their IPs either.

Prior to this removal, I can view these XP pcs. I have retried all the settings at Network & Sharing Center, Advanced Sharing Settings, even tried removing node/dchpnode registry entry, netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

I've also tried disabling NIS firewall, and I don't have any other firewall/security installed except MBAM free.

Any other suggestions?

W32.SillyFDC Episode:

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Removal-Taking-Too-Much-Time/m-p/746542

Hi,

Have you verified that all of the machines are using the same network name? The aftermath of a 'nasty' cleanup can often provide unsuspected changes to things that may not seem to be connected to the original problem.

Keep us posted

Dick has a good point (naturally) about network names since the WIndows 7 Default is Homegroup whereas for earlier versions the default is Workgroup and they can't use or recognize Homegroup which has some special properties I gather. You can use Workgroup on all or anything else except Homegroup ....

This might help get them back into step:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Networking-home-computers-running-different-versions-of-Windows

Are the network IP addresses correct? As in the same when viewed from each machine?

If you power down everything, PCs, router, modem and remove the power connections from all of them for about five minutes then start bringing them back on line from the modem end of the chain, what happens?

Thanks

Sorry dickevans for late reply.

All IP addresses remain the same. After power down, and power up, everything's still the same. My computer can't see others, and others can't see me, but we can ping each other.
