Ok,

This is another Live Update issue problem as it seems alot of people are having different types of.

I am having this issue when I am using my Linux Firewall, the liveupdate fails to update. This is the message screen that appears whenfinished.

Checking for updates..................Completed

Download Updates......................Not Required

Process Updates...........................Not Required

When I then bypass firewall the liveupdate works perfectly and processes all functions fine.

My friend and I am thinking it is because the liveupdate engine is not able to connect to the servers correctly during the update process.

We have put in the server addresses that Norton Tech has told us and still fails to work, Does anyone else operate behind another firewall or have solved this issue?

Cheers

Brat.......

Well,

Besides bypassing the firewall there is no way we have been able to get the software to update. The Linux Firewall is much stronger protection anyway.

It seems like the NIS requires too many ports to be open, connect to multiple servers to function correctly, So basically I wont be re-newing the licence for the product.

I only got it for an extra piece of security and it seems like it was a waste of time....So I am giving up trying to get it working.........

Linux_Brat

I am not sure if you understand or not. The latest update to NIS, 16.5 has changed and several people now have problems with firewall.

You are not alone. I expect Norton to resolve this problem and others do to. So in time it may be possible for you to re-enable the firewall in Linux.

I have asked some questions but to add to that, can I ask if you have understand the workarounds that some have tried successfully?

The new version of LiveUpdate is using HTTP/1.1.

Older version was using HTTP/1.0.

The problem is maybe here. HTTP/1.1 is restricted by default in some hardware firewalls, fws, and routers... Try to allow it.

Well,

This issue is still ongoing. Also to answer a question, No I dont understand all this software/networking/Firewall stuff. I am being helped by my Firewall administrator who is also having simular issues with his Linux Firewall as well.

There is a number of us all running the same Firewall, with same files, settings and software loaded and all have slightly different issues...

The only way I can connect and get the Virus updates etc is to completely bypass the Linux Firewall and connect directly to the internet modem and it works fine, So we are still ongoing and trying to indentify the issue but without success so far...

Brat............

Can you copy your Log.Lue file and send it in to be examined? It is located in the Lue\Log folder Norton or Norton Internet Security (depends on what OS you are using). This would be a great help in finding out more details into your solution.

Also check the program authorities in internet settings. I just discovered that mine still retain the path of the 16.2 engine, which is no longer there. I had to go back in and reset the permissions to the newer engine executables. Mine still worked but Linux might be more sensitive to that sort of thing.

Hi I'm new to this area, Linux_Brat asked me to fill you in on his Linux firewall details so here goes:

IPCop Ver 1.4.21 with the following plugins.

Advanced Proxy Ver 3.0.3 - URL Filter Ver 1.9.3

CopFilter with the Following.

HAVP Ver 0.90 (Trans HTTP Proxy) - Privoxy Ver 3.0.10 (Trans HTTP Proxy) - Frox Ver 0.7.18 (Trans FTP Proxy) - SpamAssasin Ver 3.2.5 - ClamAV 0.95.1 - FProt 6.2.1

Linux_Brat & I both have the same Linux based Firewall in placewith only Hardware differences and the one configuration difference between our firewalls is that his does not have the symantec update sites in his HAVP white list but mine does. I have both firewalls set not to cache symantec sites in the proxy and they are in the white list on the URL filter as well. I have found that on my XP system I can force manual updates through the firewall if I clear the Advanced proxy cache on the firewall first however automatic updates always seem to fail unless I clear the cache before the next due update. This however does not work for Linux_Brat.

I will look at the IPCOP forums about the httpver 1.1 for any known issues in the mean time.

I hope thisgives some clues to a solution, if Ican give any more info to you please ask but I may take upto 24hrs to answer, Many thanks in advance for all sugestions.

Ok Problem is now solved.

After reading a few threads I found the one with the solution for LU 16.5 - http ver 1.1 & proxy on IPCop firewall check this:

http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=nis_feedback&thread.id=43673&jump=true

Or download directly using IE (Firefox wouldn't work) from :

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20090320152130EN

Or you can run the LU and when it fails use the more info links (Sorry probably wrong name but you get the idea) & it directs you to the patch for downloading with good basic instructions.

This solutions did work for me on 3 different sites using Linux Firewalls with Proxy servers & XP SP2 workstations.

Many thanks to all those involved.

Hello Guys,

I wanted to say sorry for the delays in getting some of the info too you. I have a vision (Legally Blind) problem and rely on using the windows magnifier to be able to read alot of the third party software program screens. The Magnifier locks up my PC when trying to read the Nortons dialog boxes and I was having major trouble to retreive the info that was asked of me.

But, thanks to my close friend Moshari_3 he was able to identify the issue with some reading and hopefully the issue is solved, I was able to run the patch file he has refered to me and so far it allowed me to update the def files.

So, at this stage everything is hopefully resolved, also the error message was "8921.246" from memory. So if anyone else reads this thread try the steps from the other post and hopefully your issue will be resolved too.

Thanks everyone,

Brat.............:)
