I have a vista home premium OS with the Vista Service pack 2 I currently have Norton Antivirus

My Question: Is there any reason for me to have an exe program from Malewarebytes as part of my Norton product or any Norton updates, anti-virus updates, anti-spyware updates, etc?

What I mean is that at no time has Norton ever installed any type of exe file that woudl be part of malewarebytes, right?

So there is no way Norton is installing any files from malewarebytes? Did Norton buy malewarebytes at any point?

thanks to those who responded.

I understand the part about two "different" companies, but wondering if Norton bought malewarebytes and maybe soem "norton" items still have the malewarebytes aspect to them. You know like when Adobe and macromedia combined. You still get macromedia stuff from adobe.

I just want to make sure

Why do you ask about malwarebytes??

It is often recommended as a "backup" for NIS/NAV on these forums but you have to go to it's site or Cnet and download it seperately.

Thanks all

Here I why I was a little concerned. I had gone into the windows function that shows programs that run at startup. I had seen in the listing of programs that there was an exe file from malewarebytes that was in the programs that run at start up. Since I don't have malewarebytes installed, I thought I could delete it from the start up programs. I think I also "disabled" it. But after I did that, I freaked out and thought what if this was some part of the antispyware portion of Norton? So I looked in program files (C:\Windows\Programfiles) and did not see a folder for mlaewarebytes. So being concerned that it might be part of Nortons antispyware/virus function I thought oh great, I just messed up my Norton. But if you all say that it is not some sub function of a Norton Program, I'll feel relieved that I did'nt blank up my Norton

Message Edited by 12Owen8 on 08-11-2009 06:19 PM

I can tell you this. Norton could not protect my computer against the pavrm.exe trojan unless I paid them the extra $99 to take it off my computer. But guess what the free version of Malewarebytes took it off with their little freeware program. Thanks Norton! Norton Internet Security which I pay a subscription for removed it, I restarted and it was still there. I called - pleaded - argued that I already pay a subscribtion fee and why the extra fee for Norton to fix a mess they were supposed to be preventing. But after having to ask the guy from India to repeat himself about 100 times, I gave up and went looking on the internet for the free program I had heard about Malewarebytes. It took care of the problem in 2 minutes, and it was free, and I didn't have to wade through some heavy Indian accent for 3 hours!!!!

Okay, that does not answer my question! Why can malwarebytes remove it and not Norton?!!! Does it carry instructions that only malwarebytes can remove it?

My problem is with Norton saying they could only correct the problem if I paid them $99! I have everything scanned on my computer by Norton, email, downloads, pics, everything and I pay for the service and still I get this problem I have spent hours with Norton to try to get fixed. When I only needed 2 minutes with this free little program. That is my point.

Message Edited by teriroxy on 08-11-2009 07:37 PM

My answer, does answer your question,

1. depends on the malware's instuctions and how it has been told to act on AV's Some malware affect realtime AV's and stop the likes of MBAM, SAS..................................... from being installed and or run.

2. Depends on whether you got the infection before any defintions were created for it.

Quads
