Uh, perhaps this is a good place to mention that Symantec is no longer offering "teachable" Antispam. It gets its antispam rules solely from a database on the internet that it keeps on updating. Maybe that explains your "lost" settings?

I installed NIS2010 over NIS2009 on my wife's XP3 system. Part I was slick and lovely. It found NIS2009, uninstalled it and installed NIS2010. But not really. What it did was have everything in place for a reboot at which time the swap would take place, thus giving virtually no window of opportunity for malware to slip in between uninstall and install. Bravo for that!

But, after the return to the desktop, nothing happened. And then more nothing happened. And then still more nothing happened. Were it not for my experience with recent Norton installations, I might have clicked on something and created a disaster. Instead I waited. After almost five minutes (five minutes!), the activation screen popped open, I clicked okay, and the activation was completed.

Old settings were transferred over without problems and everything seems okay.

But remember, after the reboot, wait! And wait and wait and wait. Don't open other applications, especially not a browser, because any of these actions will try to invoke the security suite and the security suite is busy finalizing its installation. So wait.

There must be some hidden problem on your machine. Because I installed this update/upgrade on 3 hard disks. Without that kind of issue.

Here's what I did:

1) Ran Norton Removal Tool

2) Restarted

3) Ran Norton Removal Tool again

4) Installed the Update/Upgrade

No waiting what so ever.

Hi mijcar,

I´ve seen the same behavior in the past, not with NIS 2010, but on earlier versions.

And as you say, at that time only my experience and a feeling to take precautions

by NOT being connected to the internet, prevented my system to be infected with

malwares.

Don´t wait, disconnect from the internet first of all, just to be on the safe side, and

reconnect to the internet when you´re sure NIS is completly installed with all security

options in place to be configured.

The activationscreen appearence is a good sign, that everything is working correct.

Thanks for your exellent warning !!

Message Edited by Kurt on 09-08-2009 11:12 PM

Message Edited by Kurt on 09-08-2009 11:13 PM

From past experience, running the NRT on my system is not recommended as it also zaps Ghost, Partition Magic and Systemworks, which causes more grief than wanted.

Shame there is not a NRT that just does one particular product.

ps: It is some time since I ran NRT but that's what it did last time.

The little box is sitting on the screen with 'Installing' in green lettering and the bar goes very slowly across the box! (I am writing this post on another pc)

I have been sitting watching the screen showing 'Installing' for getting on for one and a half hours, is this right? I did the auto update process from my Norton Acc't and the screen now shows 'Installing' in green lettering but seems to be going on forever? I am now getting a bit worried that all is maybe not well. If anyone knows this is normal then I can relax a bit.

Hi All,

Amen, finally got the new suite up and running. Strange thing happened though. After three hours, decided to close the little update window. Clicked yes to the prompt 'Are you sure you want to exit the install setup'. Next second a big screen came up and started installing saying less than a minute remaining. This stayed for about 5 mins. I was then prompted to restart and after another short wait everything was fine.....phew!

I now have to do the same on my son's pc next door but will wait till tonight or tomorrow as I have to go out. I will have a play with it later.

Thanks to you all this morning for the advise given.

I was then prompted to restart and after another short wait everything was fine.....phew!

I now have to do the same on my son's pc next door but will wait till tonight or tomorrow as I have to go out. I will have a play with it later.

Thanks to you all this morning for the advise given.

The long wait should only be after the reboot.

I think what happened is that you encountered the hidden query. It's never happened to me with Symantec, but I experienced it a while back with Microsoft. There is a query box that somehow got hidden behind another screen. Once that happens, it's impossible to know it's there. Query boxes don't appear on the toolbar and the only way to get back to one is with an Alt-Tab.

Stage 1 of the installation should take about two to three minutes, then you reboot.

Stage 2 can take awhile after you get back to the desktop. Also, I forgot to tell me what to look for. You will get either a pop-up screen asking to activate or you will see the normal NIS icon appear in the Notification Area (SysTray). If you see the NIS icon appear, you can left-click on it once, which appears to hasten the activation dialogue.

Back again. That is interesting mijcar, I didn't think it was right at the time but you know how it is, didn't want to stop it just in case I caused other problems with the install process, but was only when I closed the install window that everything kicked in as it should!

I still have to do another upgrade on our other pc, same set up and machine so will be interesting to compare the procedures with this one.

I must have hit the jackpot then as last night NIS 2009 updated itself to .11 on both my Vista machines and then downloaded and installed NIS 2010 over the updates. I didn't have to remove anything whatsoever. It even cleaned up after itself.( on one of them)

Took some time I'll admit but then windows updated about eight files and had to reboot for that. This Morning all works well so far it's all good on both machines.

Windows downloaded more stuff this AM but it took next to no time to handle it. Not sure but I think this version of NIS is much easier on the CPU and memory than any past versions.

But I think the answer is to be patient as stated.

Hope you all have the same luck that I had.

Message Edited by chatham on 09-09-2009 08:26 AM
