NAV 2008 Live Update Crashes Vista

I'm running NAV 2008 on Vista Home Premium on a HP 2.7 Gz desktop with 4 GB RAM. I have 7 MB broadband Net access. My Vista is on auto update and is fully updated. Live Update is on auto and fully updated. My problem is I am experiencing a random error on startup of Vista. When Live Update popup appears after Vista startup and I click "Yes", the OS freezes up. No Live Update error codes appear.

Solution: I performed a hard reboot of Vista. Vista system diagnostics reported no problems during the reboot. After reboot, Norton System Works, Disk Doctor, and Win Doctor all reported no problems. I performed a NAV Auto Fix and it found and repaired one registry error. I performed a manual Live Update and LIve Update returned that my NAV was fully updated. Cleaned out several files in Windows Temp.

I went into Symantec Live Chat, but the tech coud find no problem to fix. My system log only reported a crash due to Live Update failure to connect.

After chatting with several IT pros in my work group and other IT user forums on the Net, it appears that this problem may be related to incompatibilities between NAV system updates and the last Windows Vista security update. I have seen this problem myself with NAV versions as far back as 2006. In addition, due to the daily def and software updates we get from Symantec Live Update, I wonder how well these files are being checked before being placed on their server?

I feel that while NAV is a fine AV and ASW program, it suffers from being user friendly due to random system crashed due to Live Update. At least with NAV 2008, we have Auto Fix which is a big improvement.

PC Magazine and others have also reported Vista crashes as the result of Vista vs NAV conflicts.

I hope that Symantec can resolve these issues before users get sick of them and procure other AV product.

Based on commenters' replies and my own trouble-shooting of this problem, I have performed the following fixes:

1) Disabled "NAV Load On Start-up". Open NAV, click Options, click "Real Time Protection", click "Auto Protect", uncheck "Load NAV On Start-up". Although this does disable boot sector checking, I believe it is good programming to prevent NAV from loading before Windows to avoid conflicts with shared files. Although having NAV load prior to Windows does disable boot-sector checking, I believe that the risk is minimal unless you are doing a ton of file-sharing, which I am not. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe that malicious websites contribute significant boot-sector viruses.

2) Turned Off Windows Defender AV and Windows Firewall. Do these from your Control Panel, Security panel. Seems I omitted to do this task when I bought this PC. It's not a good idea to have more than one AV running at the same time as conflicts will occur. And, should Windows Defender seek an auto-update at the same time as NAV, a Windows lockup can occur.

3) Since I'm also running SpySweeper, another resource hog and slow to load, I give this program additional time to finish loading after startup before checking "Yes" on the NAV Live Update. Place mouse on SpySweeper quick launch icon at bottom right of screen and verify it's finished loading prior to enabling Live Update check.

I have performed a series of 12 startups and shutdowns in a row, and, so far, my random error of Live Update crashing Vista has not returned. I believe I have solved this problem, but will monitor it for future conflicts.
