Remove NIS 2008 Install Nis 2009

Hi,

Due I need to use the Norton Remove tool to remove NIS 2008. Could I use Add/Remove in the Control Panel to remove NIS2008. I will install NIS 2009 once NIS 2008 is off my hard drive.

Hi Ryan816,

No the NRT is not required.

Best practice for installing NIS 2009:

Download and save the NIS 2009 package to your desktop.

Unplug from the internet.

Uninstall NIS 2008 using Windows Add-Remove Programs.

You should be prompted for a restart - please do so.

After the restart, uninstall Symantec Live Update and Symantec Live Update Notifier (if present)

Perform another restart and then defragment your hard drive.

Double click on the NIS 2009 package and the installation will begin.

To complete the installation, NIS 2009 will ask for a connection to the internet - it is safe to plug back in now.

The activation process should automatically recognize your activation key; if not, you can enter your key manually.

After NIS 2009 has installed, perform a manual "Run Live Update".

You can uninstall the Norton product from the Add or Remove programs. Make sure that you uninstall the LiveUpdate also from the Add or Remove programs.

If I re-call, I was the first one to use those instructions on the Forums and now you are using them. Nowhere does it say: "Instructions provided by Floating_Red.". ;)

The Norton Removal Tool (NRT) is recommend to be used when uninstalling a Norton product. (Be sure to only use the tool if you are removing all of your Norton products or you only have the one installed, as this tool will remove ALL Symantec Products installed on your PC) The purpose of this tool is that sometimes Windows Installer does not remove all files associated with your Norton product.

Due remember to write down your Product Key or setup a Norton Account before uninstalling your product. After you remove your Norton Product you may also want to consider removing all of the old Norton files that are left over before upgrading. These files can be found here:

1. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ Remove All Symantec Or Norton Folders

2. C:\Programfiles\ Any Symantec or Norton Folder (Only Remove Folders Related To The Product You Wish To Uninstall)

3. C:\Programfiles\CommonFiles\Symantec Shared

After you have completed these steps it is recommended that you delete your temporary and prefetch files:

Go to START, RUN, Type: %temp%

Delete All Files

Go to START, RUN, Type: Prefetch

Delete All Files

Then continue with your download and installation of your Norton Product(s)

Please remember by following these steps you WILL be removing ALL Norton Products from your PC

Actually the Norton Removal Tool is recommended for a failed or damaged installation. Even the 2009 version of NRT states the same.

It is not required for a normal installation.

I totally agree on this one.

Let's keep it this way. No need for NRT tool if there isn't any problem
