Norton AV While scanning Scansmore than the total items on my backup disk.

Hi,

Sorry if this has ben covered already,

When I scan my backup disk, It gets to the total it continues scanning. I would not be concerned if it was only a small number, but at more than 6,000,000 items, Im a little concerned.

Is this normal behaviour?

Do you have a large archive? The number of files that will be scanned is calculated during "preflight" when Norton AntiVirus scans your hard drive. However as it is scanning, if it finds an archive (a compressed file), it will decompress the archive and scan the items within it. The files within the archive are counted, so sometimes it'll scan more files than you have on your drive. But you're right, six million is a lot. Perhaps you have a large archive laying around, like an OS installer disk?

The disk is used for time machine backups,

I ran a "ls -1a -R |wc -l" from the mount mount point on the disk and got 42,557,434

This will be slightly higher due to directory entries.

Though because it is a time machine backup their will be disk images contained in it and other archives.

Also it took ages to work through the file structure.

Strange. In some ways it would be better just to give me a eta and the number of files scanned.
