Hi Swingblade,

Just wanted to add one thing at the moment. The only reports I am aware of with NU and any sort of really major issue is when the Registry Defrag is run on Windows 7. I am tracking this issue personally and have already sent an alert to Symantec concerning this.

Other than that there are no other major issues I am aware of apart from the normal minor issues which people will always experience from time to time.

The moral on this one is don't use Registry Defrag on Windows 7 until we have gotten to the bottom of the issue.

Thanks

Allen

Hello- I'm running Win 7 Ultimate x64 on a Dell 1640. I'm a long time Norton user since the DOS days and Norton Commander ... aaaahhh the good old days!

For background info ... I'm also running Norton NIS 2010 with no problems except that Norton Toolbar will not install or run on IE 8 x64. Norton tells me they are aware of this problem. Hopefully there will be a fix soon. The toolbar will run just fine if I start up IE 8 x32 but IE 8 x32 will not execute many types of hyperlinks when running in Win 7 x64. Sigh .... it is always something isn't it?

Back to the Norton Utilities 14.0 problems. I purchased it and downloaded it yesterday. It would not start up. I have since uninstalled it twice and reinstalled it twice with no luck.

When I start it, either from the System Tray or from the Desktop Icon, it tries to start and the yellow Norton Utilities logo screen appears for a second and then I get a pop up screen that says ...

"Norton Utilities 14.0 has stopped working"

Under "Problem Details" it says the following:

Problem signature:

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

Application Name: nu.exe

Application Version: 14.5.0.116

Application Timestamp: 4ab98f57

Fault Module Name: StackHash_aa89

Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0

Fault Module Timestamp: 00000000

Exception Code: c000041d

Exception Offset: 75704cad

OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1

Locale ID: 1033

Additional Information 1: aa89

Additional Information 2: aa89afe1780d3ea893664b2a8f99c255

Additional Information 3: 8a62

Additional Information 4: 8a62ab1a6b4dd9c76ab9fa8456e36ba9

Read our privacy statement online:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=104288&clcid=0x0409

If the online privacy statement is not available, please read our privacy statement offline:
C:\Windows\system32\en-US\erofflps.txt

I followed the Norton online trouble shooting procedures and tried listing all 4 of the recommended NU startup files in the DEP exception list and rebooted with no luck. Same problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks ...

Progress report ...

I went to the Norton Update Center and tried to Update Norton Utilities 14.0 even though the install program said that the program was verified updated and current after each installation.

Anyway, the Update Center said the version of Norton Utilities installed after purchase yesterday is not compatible with Windows 7 and that a new compatible version will be installed after it's release in November, 2009.

SInce it is December 2009 and since the Norton website clearly said the product I bought to download was full compatible with Win 7 64 bit systems, I' have to admit I'm a little confused. It appears I've wasted a great deal of time while being caught up in Catch 22 situation.

Any help here folks? Not mad, just frustrated.

Have you tried running it in compatibility mode? Navigate your way to the program's .exe file, then right click on it and choose properties. In here there should be a compatibility tab. This is where you can run it in compatibility mode for XP.

Thanks for the thoughts. Normally, I would give it a try but since NU is frying everyone else's x64 computers and since Norton is still selling the product and telling everyone it works perfect in x64, I don't think I'm gonna try it right now. I can't help but notice that the actual Norton employees on here have avoided this string like H1N1.

The question is:

WHEN WILL NORTON STEP UP TO THE PLATE, ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY, AND STOP SELLING THIS PRODUCT ON THEIR WEBSITE TO UNSUSPECTING BUYERS WHO WILL HAVE TO COMPLETELY REINSTALL WIN 7 x64 AND ALL THEIR FILES AND SOFTWARE IF THEY USE IT??? ( Assuming of course they already have their stuff backed up on what might be a new computer. )

Really, really unacceptable corporate behavior with ZERO consideration for Norton consumers. One buys Norton products to solve problems and avoid problems, not to get the blue screen of death and fry their harddrive. Anybody over there ever heard of product testing before release? ... let alone, again, not continuing to sell a product with known death bugs.

So far, the answer seems to be, "You shoulda bought Ghost dude!"

There's an update available and I'd like to see if that makes a difference for you. You can launch via update.exe in the \Program Files\Norton Utilities 14\ folder. That should get you up to 14.5.0.118. Once you get it, reboot and then see if you can launch the program.

I have NU 14 on Win7 64bit Pro and NU 14 used to run but now will not open. I did a registry defrag and system defrag like I did before but now will not open. My All Program \ Norton Utilities 14 folder does not have update.exe. Contents of folder are: Home Page, Norton Utilites 14 Quick Start Guide, Norton Utilities 14, Uninstall Norton Utilities 14.

Also, now Firefox is now unstable (i.e. crashes), IE cannot open content in new tabs, and OS gives error "Windows Explorer needs to close" intermittently.

I downloaded the 30 day trial after not using Norton Utilities for a few years, but I'm getting the same error in Windows 7 x64 - the install seems to go fine but then get the dialogue box - "Norton Utilities 14.0 has stopped working". I ran update and it downloaded a new nu.exe but after rebooting NU 14.0 still won't run. I had high hopes for NU under Windows 7.

Out of curiosity I uninstalled, rebooted, and reinstalled changing the default installation location from "C:\Programs Files (x86)\...." to "C:\Program Files\...." but that didn't make any difference.

Any ideas? Thanks.

-Gary

Erik,

I thought I'd mention that I'm running NIS 2010 v17.5.0.127 as my security product. For completeness, I've also got Ghost 15 v15.0.0.35659 loaded as well.

Thanks,.

Thanks Mainframer.

Since you have a crash and dumps, what is the file size compressed?

No crash.

I run SuperAntiSpyware 4, Prevx 3, Microsoft Security Essentials and AVG Antivirus 8.5. I tried the Norton Utilities 14.0 trial on another machine that runs all the same software and the Norton Utilities came up fine. Appears to be something about main PC I use. Thanks.

-Gary

Gary,

Are both PC's Win 7 x64 (considering the thread title I'm making an assumption)?

Are both Intel/AMD processors? What's the make of the computer with the problem?

I am having the same problem. OS is Windows 7 x 64. Uninstalled and reinstalled NU 14.5 twice.

Launching Norton Utilities 14.5 simply does not display the Main Status screen. All I get is a window which asks if I want to allow NU 14 to makes changes to my system. I click "Yes" and then nada happens.
