My system will crank up the "Norton Security Suite is currently performing background tasks" when I am busy using applications and performing work.

I don't mind if it scans away when the system is idle, but it needs to step aside if I use the system, and certainly not initiate tasks if I am using the system/keyboard/mouse & the screensaver is off.

I have daily scans set up, manual scans.

How do I set Norton to suspend scans when the system is NOT idle?

If you move your mouse, or type on the keyboard those scans should stop immediately. Maybe if your PC is an older one, I noticed it as well, it can run a bit more, but it will stop very soon after you are out of idle.

Do this happens by you, or it won't stop running scans whatever you are doing?

@ lathemill,

Have you observed any "regularity" to the scan interupting your work? Does it occur daily at the same time? I am curious if you have a scan scheduled in Windows Task Scheduler that is causing the scan to run.

Please explain how you have the daily scans set up....since as far as I know it can not be scheduled in NSS, but it can be scheduled thru Windows Task Scheduler.

It would appear that you have 3 Automatic Tasks scheduled on the Automatic Tasks Tab of the Task Scheduler.

Windows Temp File Cleanup @ 11:00 PM
.
Disk Optimizer @ 11:04 PM
.
Internet Explorer Temp File Cleanup @ 11:04 PM

It also appears that Automatic LiveUpdate ran @ 11:00 PM and an Idle Quick Scan ran @ 11:01 PM may also be checked as Auto Tasks.
.
My confusion started when I saw that the Automatic LiveUpdate was not run at Idle, but the Quick Scan a minute later was run in Idle. Also the three I listed first above were run in the same time frame and all were run during Idle.
.
If your Idle Timeout is set for 30 minutes, the system would have had to be idle for 30 minutes before entering idle and there is not 30 minutes between the Auto Live Update (not in Idle) and the rest of the functions run in Idle.
.
I then tried to corelate the time of your posts (as listed on my system) and the times of the events as listed in your Norton Tasks. The aborted Idle Full Scan was over an hour off timewise, and Norton Community Watch (6:27 PM) and Pulse Updates (7:03 PM) occured later than the time on my system for your post of 6:09 PM. I figure you have to be in the Eastern Time Zone to explain the time difference. I don't believe your system clock is off an hour??
.
To me everything looks good and everything appears to be set up correctly for it to run as it should....being interupted when it should come out of Idle.
.
I have gone back over your past posts and the problems you have had in the past. It may in fact be time for an uninstall, run the Norton Removal Tool and get a fresh download from Comcast, Install it and manually run LiveUpdate as many times as necessary for it to respond with no more updates available. If you use Identity Safe (Log-ins &/or Cards) be sure to back up that info before you uninstall.

.

Please post back with anything else may think of or comments about this post you may need answered prior to doing the uninstall reinstall.

Thanks for the latest feedback:
.
Since you use Identity Safe, before you uninstall you will want to go into Settings > Identity Protection > Log into Identity Safe by clicking on Configure (if not already logged-in).
.
You will see a page of settings as shown below:
.
.
.

You will be interested in the Backup Identity Safe Data option - you can click on Configure and will be permitted to browse your system for a location to save the data to. I have an Identity Safe BU folder in my Documents that I use - but the choice of location is yours.

.
Once that is accomplished, you can uninstall NSS via normal removal procedures in Vista.
.
After it is uninstalled, run the Norton Removal Tool following the instruictions here:
.
http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&selected_nav=partner&pvid=&docurl=20091202133639EN
.
After running the Removal Tool, reboot and follow the instructions at the bottom of the above link to download and install a fresh copy of NSS.
.
After installing NSS, run Manual LiveUpdate as many times as necessary until you receive a "no more updates available" response from LiveUpdate. I reboot at this point, but am not sure if it is mandatory or not.
.

Once NSS is installed, go back to the Identity Protection Settings page (above) and Select Restore Identity Safe Data by clicking configure. If you set a password when saved the data, enter that password, the locationof where you saved the data and then click OK. Your Idnetity Safe data should be restored to what you had before you uninstalled Norton.
.
Please post back with any questions and if none - let us know how things turned out and more importantly if it fixed your original problem of not coming out of idle when you use your system while it is running the background tasks.
