Norton Utilities 14 Non-activation

I apologize from the beginning if this problem has come up before, but I couldn't see it on the forum.

I purchased NIS 2011 with NU 14 both on discs over a week ago. It gives me 1 year protection for up to 3PCs. I loaded NIS and NU onto my new laptop without a problem and they are both working normally. The problem is with my old laptop. NIS will work on it but Norton Utilities won't.

My old laptop is a E-System 3090 UK running Windows Home Basic : Service Pack 2.

I can download Norton Utilities from the disc up to the point of the Smart Updates but then nothing. It just won't let me activate the software. I have uninstalled and installed NU many times without success. It just doesn't come up with the window to enter the product key to activate it.

Any ideas?

Hi,

you should try to use the Norton Removal Tool, and then reinstall both products.

Here are the steps for you:

The solution for this would be to remove the program with the Norton Removal Tool, and then reinstall it.
Here are the steps:
1. If you use the feature, please backup your Identity Safe data
2. Download latest Norton Internet Security installer: www.norton.com/nis11 (this is the English one, for other languages please go to the Norton Update Center: www.norton.com/nuc )

3. Download latest Norton Utilities 14: www.norton.com/nu14
4. Download Norton Removal Tool: www.norton.com/nrt
5. Disconnect from internet

6. Remove NortonGhost from Start Menu or from Control Panel -> Add or Remove programs
7. Remove Norton Internet Security from Start Menu or from Control Panel -> Add or Remove programs
8. Reboot
9. Run the Norton Removal Tool, reboot (repeat it 2-3 times)
10. Install Norton Internet Security 2011, and activate it with your old serial
11. Run Live Update until you get no new updates
12. Restore your Identity Safe data
13. Install and activate Norton Utilities 14

Thanks for a quick response.

I followed the steps on your list but I still have the problem of NU not activating properly.

I downloaded NIS installer, NU14 and the removal tool and switched off the internet.

Uninstalled NU14 and NIS 2011.

Rebooted the computer.

And then I ran the Norton Removal Tool and rebooted three times just to be on the safe side.

I then loaded NIS installer and it installed as a 15 day trial offer. Reconnected to the internet and reactivated it. The Product Code Number appeared on the screen for me to make a note of. NIS 2011 is working correctly with 357 days left remaining. I then updated NIS and rebooted again.

Ran NU14 until the NU Setup Wizard Completed message came up.

Then the Welcome to Smart Update window appeared and I clicked Next.

Update complete! and I clicked Finish.

The orange and white Norton Utilities window appears on screen. But if I hover the pointer over the window it changes to a donut as if it is busy. But looking at the Task Manager the program is not running.

Try this:

1. Right click on the Norton Internet Security icon by the system clock

2. Turn off Smart Firewall, set the duration for 15 minutes

3. Turn off Auto-Protect, set the duration for 15 minutes

4. Try to open Norton Utilities

5. Turn firewall and autoprotect back

Yes, tried your suggestions but couldn't see any appreciable difference in the behaviour of NU.

Nothing different. The computer warns that turning off the firewall/anti virus reduces your system protection.

When opening NU it asks "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?" Click "Yes"

The Norton Utilities window pops up and that's it!

I then enabled both the Firewall and Auto Protect.

I got some instructions, and you should try this first:

1. Open NIS2011

2. Go to Settings -> Miscellaneous Settings

3. Find Norton Product's Tamper Protection, and turn it off

4. Set time duration to 15 minutes

5. Close NIS

6. Open NU

7. Try to open and activate it

4 (a) Turned off Smart Firewall -- 15 minutes <OK>

Your Computer is at risk

4 (b) Disabled Antivirus Auto Protect -- 15 minutes <OK>

5. Closed NIS2011

Save changes?

You have changed your settings. Do you want to save these changes? clicked <Yes>

Security Request

Protection Alert

Turning off the feature reduces your system protection - Norton Product Tamper Protection.

Select the duration -- 15 minutes. Click <OK>

6. Opened NU

A program needs your protection to continue. Click <Continue>

Norton Utilities orange and white window opens

And then same as before

I've enabled the Smart Firewall and Antivirus Auto-Protect and turned back on the Norton Product Tamper Protection <Apply>

Please do these steps:

1. Remove Norton Internet Security (select the keep user data option)

2. Rebott

3. Turn on Windows Firewall

4. Open Norton Utilities

5. Try to activate it

6. When done, reinstall NIS

7. Reboot

8. Test NU

Went through steps 1 - 5 OK. Then I have the same old problem NU window with the cursor in busy mode!

Do you want me to still carry out step 6 install NIS again?

Yes, you should reinstall NIS to have the full proteciton.

EDIT: Can you please try what happens if you temporarly disable User Account Control ( usually known as UAC ).

Reinstalled NIS.

Rebooted computer.

NU Startup message from task bar pops up.

Closed it down

Ran NU and window asked permission to continue

NU window pops up and busy cursor
