I have Windows XP Pro SP3 and I have an issue of being unable to verify that Norton DNS is working properly. I have the Norton DNS IP addresses properly configured on my home network Router. I have left each of my Windows XP Pro PC's set to obtain a DNS address automatically. I ran the Norton Test Page with both Firefox 4 and Internet Explorer 8.

http://setup.nortondns.com/

I do not feel comfortable using Norton DNS without verification.

Any ideas on what may be the problem?

Thanks in Advance.

On one of the systems, open a command prompt and type:

ipconfig /flushdns

Then type:

ipconfig /all

If you see the Norton DNS addresses listed under DNS, click that link again and it should say your OK.

Dave

I fixed the problem with ipconfig /flushdns not working. Several years ago I was using a large Anti-Malware hosts file, and I had disabled my DNSClient Service. I switched the DNSClient Service to Automatic and Started it. The command ipconfig /flushdns now works.

Running a ipconfig /flushdns did not resolve the issue.

When you type: ipconfig /all

do you see the Norton DNS address listed?

198.153.192.1 and 198.153.194.1

If they are listed, do you see others there as well, the old ones from your ISP?

I think it lists them in the order they are used with the first one the primary DNS address.

Dave

Are the XP Pro PCs all using the router as their DNS server? (Check under details in the network interface adapter.)

Sounds like the router is doing a NAT type protection scheme for your home network (if the info above checks out). The test for Norton DNS is individual / direct to the PC browsing the web site; it returns the DNS configuration for the current in use network interface on that PC. You could change the DNS for one machine's network interface manually and test that. It should show up positive.

When I do an ipconfig /all I only see only the Router's IP address.

I actually have an "entry level" Business "Firewall" for my home network rather than a typical NAT Router.

The following is the "wired" Firewall Router that I am using for my Home Network:

http://us.zyxel.com/Products/Details.aspx?CategoryGroupNo=F5C2FDD7-B829-4990-9DA7-11E3E6B3A2EE

The problem was with my Firewall DNS configuration.

I did not understand the term "Domain Zone". I gave each of the Norton DNS IP address entries a name (NortonDNS1 & NortonDNS2). Today, I called a technical support person for my Firewall and he said that I should put an asterisk (*) in the spot for the "Domain Zone".

Norton DNS is now showing that it is working.
