That would tell you if it is a hardware or software problem since the SRD is running it's own OS.

Red,

Did as instructed and the backup file was verified ok, I also put "Lights Out Restore" on and tried that and all was well.

So I take it that Vista is at fault then?

Deric

Hello:

I'm getting the Unable to load dll error when installing Ghost 15.0. Running Windows XP sp3.

This error comes up during the beginning of the install, I have no other Norton products installed.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I know it is a silly question but is the O/S the home consumer version? because Ghost 15 won't load on a corporate version.

Deric

Deric,

You keep saying that about home version of Windows. I'm pretty sure you can install it on any Windows version as long as it is XP, Vista or 7.

I have access to an enterprise version of Windows XP Pro. I'll try it in Virtual PC.

EDIT: Ghost 15 installed perfectly in Windows XP Professional. This is a version of Windows XP that does not require activation so I would assume it is an enterprise version, correct? As far as I know all home versions not installed by a OE manufacturer require activation.

Red,

perhaps my terminology is wrong, I say that because I tried to install Ghost 15 on a mate's computer for a 30 day trial and it failed to install.

He bought the pc from a shop in town and I think the supplier had installed one of a batch of Vista O/Ss, the only way I could back it up for him was to use Ghost 2003 MS-DOS which does a cold image.

To look at the screen you can't tell whether it is not a "Home" version, the only way I found out was to try his disks on my test machine and it was only then when it was loading that I could see a difference in the UI as the installation progressed, do you see what I mean?

Deric

I don't see why it won't install. Norton don't care how Windows is licensed. I would like to see screen shots of the install failing. It probably has to do with the Windows installer or .NET framework being corrupted.

Red,

Yes both backups were going to a USB drive, I had to hang a HDD off the motherboard to get Ghost 2003 MS-DOS to back it up.

I don't know about the Intel drivers to be honest.

I normally pop round to see this friend on a Tuesday afternoon so if you want me to try hanging a HDD off the motherboard I may be able to call in perhaps on Thursday, I have put a 30 day trial of G15 on for him.

Deric.

Red,

while the iron was hot I thought I would see if my mate would let me try another backup this morning and he very kindly consented.

I tried two runs, the first with all USB devices connected and it hung at 78% and the second run with all USB devices disconnected and it hung at 84%.

In both cases it had reached the stage "Validating recovery Point Data" and I had to force a shut down, rebooted and ran RPB and it verified the file .v2i.

When I opened the folder Ghost 15 hadn't created the .sv2i file which means that it won't recover although the .v2i file is valid.

This machine is running Vista with plenty of power and memory and it has been activated, I have just installed G15 (30 day trial) on my test machine running XP Pro and all is well.

You did mention Intel drivers, how do I check for them, this is of course something I don't normally do so I am groping in the dark.

Deric.

The sv2i file is only an index file that tells Ghost how the partitions are laid out for easier recovery. You do NOT need it to recover the HDD. You will have to browse by filename instead of system. Did you ever notice that a cold backup does not generate a .sv2i file?

Look in Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Check the driver properties for the listed devices to see if they are Intel or Microsoft.

Also, do you have another external drive and cable that you could try? Maybe there is something about the one you are using.

Red,

Funny old game ain't it,

I checked out the drivers and they are all Microsoft on my mates machine,I also tried another drive, a Sata 1 and it didn't like it.

However I did run a recovery with yesterdays image/recovery point created on a Sata 2 and it worked ok.

Although the machine hung at 84% validating the image, the file created was valid and it can be used in case of emergency so I am happy with that.

I have suggested the he buys a new drive so that I can fit it in his machine permanently, transfer his data to it and use for backup with Ghost 15.

Deric

Deric,

Can you open RPB from the SRD and do a verification to see if it hangs there too? That would tell you if it is a hardware or software problem since the SRD is running it's own OS.
