Everytime I run a full backup on C Drive, I get the following error:

Error EC8F17B7: Cannot create recovery points for job: Drive Backup of OS (C:\). Error E7D1001F: Unable to write to file.

Error EBAB03F1: The system cannot find the file specified. (UMI:V-281-3215-6071)

Details: Source: Norton Ghost

The machine is running Windows Vista, 32 bit, and it has a 1 TB C Drive (300 gigs used) and a 1 TB Western Digital My Password backup drive. All software is up to date, including latest firmware installed on My Passport backup drive.

I am using Ghost 15 SP1 for the backups, the job is set to do a independent backup each time.

I have tried the following to fix.

1) Removed software, using Norton remove utility, and reinstall Norton Ghost.

2) Chkdsk/r on both C and backup drive Western Digital My password 1 tb drive, with latest firmware. All clean.

3) Changed security permissions on drives to make sure local user account (a local admin account) has full access to C: and F: drives.

Still no sucess with any of the above. It seems to fail when it gets to around 95%. I don't know exactly since it usually runs for 5 hours before failing. Any other suggestions would be highly appreciated to fix this problem.

OK, I followed those directions.

When I ran the list providers command, the VSS Provider was not listed.

When I ran the list writers command the VSS provider was not listed

So I went to step 3, opened an "elevated" command promt and ran

On the command prompt, type the following command to unregister the SymSnap VSS Provider files, and then press Enter:

VssProviderInstall.exe -unregister "Symantec SymSnap VSS Provider" "Symantec SymSnap VSS Provider"

On the command prompt, type the following command to re-register the SymSnap VSS Provider files, and then press Enter:

VssProviderInstall.exe -register "Symantec SymSnap VSS Provider" "VSS_2003.dll" "Symantec SymSnap VSS Provider" "Symantec SymSnap VSS Provider"

Then I restarted all 3 services.

I then ran the list providers command again, and still not there.

I also noticed in the windows application event log, the following error is showing when starting the Symantec SymSnap VSS Provider:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine ConvertStringSidToSid. hr = 0x80070539.

Operation: OnIdentify event Gathering Writer Data

Context:    Execution Context: Shadow Copy Optimization Writer    Writer Class Id: {4dc3bdd4-ab48-4d07-adb0-3bee2926fd7f}    Writer Name: Shadow Copy Optimization Writer    Writer Instance ID: {ff2dac61-2e90-4c2d-ae52-6fc57a92e500}

OK, looks like you pointed me to an outdated article, this one seems better:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home&entsrc=redirect_pubweb&docid=kb20091211072335EN_EndUserProfile_en_us

So I ran this instead of what the other article said:

VssProviderInstall.exe -register "Symantec SymSnap VSS Provider" "SymSnapProvider.dll" "Symantec SymSnap VSS Provider" "Symantec SymSnap VSS Provider"

Restarted all sevices, no errors in the windows logs.

List providers now shows VSS !

However list writers does not show any VSS writers, here is what shows:

C:\Windows\system32>vssadmin list writers vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool (C) Copyright 2001-2005 Microsoft Corp.

Writer name: 'System Writer' Writer Id: {e8132975-6f93-4464-a53e-1050253ae220} Writer Instance Id: {7fe35419-6953-45a3-bc92-437cd9abec21} State: [1] Stable Last error: No error

Writer name: 'ASR Writer' Writer Id: {be000cbe-11fe-4426-9c58-531aa6355fc4} Writer Instance Id: {c720b70e-fd34-435b-8be3-b877ecc7fc3e} State: [1] Stable Last error: No error

Writer name: 'Registry Writer' Writer Id: {afbab4a2-367d-4d15-a586-71dbb18f8485} Writer Instance Id: {cc5a7555-00e7-44a3-85c7-d505d2637232} State: [1] Stable Last error: No error

Writer name: 'COM+ REGDB Writer' Writer Id: {542da469-d3e1-473c-9f4f-7847f01fc64f} Writer Instance Id: {e5856aa3-bc57-4b66-9aaa-1b372ab54a13} State: [1] Stable Last error: No error

Writer name: 'WMI Writer' Writer Id: {a6ad56c2-b509-4e6c-bb19-49d8f43532f0} Writer Instance Id: {54ef95fb-90ad-48fb-b028-aa0da1cf238f} State: [1] Stable Last error: No error

Writer name: 'MSSearch Service Writer' Writer Id: {cd3f2362-8bef-46c7-9181-d62844cdc0b2} Writer Instance Id: {d5836989-bbd2-4244-b92e-3b5440b98be0} State: [1] Stable Last error: No error

C:\Windows\system32>

Any idea why VSS isn't showing up in the above?

Still no luck with a backup. Tried various thing, including re-regestering DLL's related to VSS processes. Also followed this:

Open regedit and locate 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList'

Under the ProfileList subkey, delete any subkey that is named SID.bak.

There were none, so that wasn't the issue.

Any more ideas?

thx.

If it's getting to 95% and failing, the snap has already happened and other things are happning. Do you have another other drives you can save the image file to, just as a test? If not, browse to the drive and create a folder on that drive to save the image to, then edit the job and save the backups to that folder.

You could try to save the C: drive. It should work, though we'd only want to do that as test, and only once, otherwise we'll be creating an image of a drive with an image on it, which could grow exponentially. In fact, when you do your test, click on the TASKS tab, and choose to do a one-time backup only. Once done, make sure you delete the backup file if it gets to 100% successfully.

When the second backup failed, did it happen when you kicked the job immediately after the succesful backup? Also, do you / did you disconnect the USB Passport drive at all from your computer?

Try deleting the job, running it, then get the second run to fail again. If you can, send me the NortonGhost.log.txt file located at C:\Users\All Users\Symantec\Norton Ghost\Logs.

I have tried it immediatly after and sucessful backup and it failed and also as described previously, after reboot, a few hours, etc etc. All combinations tried and failed. I have also tried unplugging USB drive, pluggin it back in, trying a different port, etc etc. All resulted in it failing. I will post the log file later tonight.

Is this drive used for anything else, other than for backups? It appears to be an I/O issue with the drive. Ghost is attempting to create the backup, but can't because of an issue with that drive. If the drive is used for nothing else, we can wipe the drive clean and create a new partition for the backups.

It is an external backup drive, it is used for backups only.

I will reformat the drive, with 2 partitions, a very small one (10 megs), and a large one, the rest of the 1 TB hard drive.

I'll assign the F:\ drive to the 10 meg and g:\ drive to the large partition.

I'll use the large one for backups (g:\ drive)

I'll then delete the current backup job and recreate it, using the new large partition. I'll let you know the results late tonight as I will need to run the job twice. I know the backup will run fine the first time (as it always does when you create a new backup job), but has been failing on all subsequent runs of the backup

Once the 1st backup completes, go into the the Ghost console, right-mouse click on the job, and choose 'Run Backup Now'. This will kick it off immediately.

I was instructed to create a new partition, and then use that new partition for backups.

I took that to mean, the drive should have 2 partitions, using one of them for the backup.

I randomly chose 10 megs for one of the partitions, I could have made it 1 meg.
