I am another user with the same problem. I have been trying to use Ghost 14 on a Vista system, after Symantec appeared to have fixed the problem I and a number of others were having with large incremental backups (as large as the base). I thought I would re-install it in a system that I use for production work. Bad idea?

I had been using Acronis on this system for some time, and it works reliably, without any other problems. However it's HMI is not as usable or friendly as Ghost. So, I uninstalled Acronis and installed Ghost. Now Ghost appears to create the same problem you have described on this Vista Business machine.

I found some other threads in other discussion forums indicating the possibility that Acronis changes some Microsoft components, which are then removed when uninstalled - leading to this problem. However I have not examined this in any detail at this time, and have no idea if it could be part of the problem.

I also installed Ghost 14 on another vista business machine that had no other backup services on it prior to the Ghost installation, and have not seen any problems with that machine as yet.

Whenever Ghost 14 makes a backup on my system, whether incremental (scheduled or manual) or a fresh full backup, I get a message saying the Volume Shadow Copy service has an error and has stopped working. The backups themselves seem to complete properly, but I have never used them for a full disaster recovery (eg full restore to a formatted disc). I have done several tests and the latest files do seem backed up (incremental backup) and I can "recover" files when I test a few of them. I have included the Windows event log information below. Can any one, user or Symantec support person, shed light on this for me? Basically two questions - 1) are my image backups "good" - that is complete and useful for full disaster restores even with the Shadow Volume errors, and 2) how can I fix this problem so that it no longer occurs. I have a Dell M130 XPS laptop, run Vista Ultimate 32 bit, have done all UPDATES to the program. Thanks, Paul S.

First event in log before error messages

Info 6C8F1F63: The drive-based backup job, Drive Backup of OS (C:\), RECOVERY (D:\), has been started manually.

Details:

Source: Norton Ghost

In time order sequence there are three error messages

1

Faulting application vssvc.exe, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x47918fb9, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x4791a7a6, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x000659c3, process id 0x234, application start time 0x01c92bcbfb374a70.

2

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Writer ASR Writer did not respond to a GatherWriterStatus call.

3

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: An internal inconsistency was detected in trying to contact shadow copy service writers.

I did a Google on that [Volume Shadow Copy Service error] and it turns up quite a few references. The first one may be worth you following up since it is a link to a MSKB article:

You receive a "Volume Shadow Copy Service" error message and event 5013 or event 12302 is logged when you use the Backup feature in Windows XP or in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005

Allthough the background is different it may be worth checking out this and some of the other references.

Hang on here for someone to come in who has experience with GHOST.

Thanks for the suggestion - the workup in the KB article seems a bit obtuse to me - I am not sure what to do. For the moment, let us see if someone else with specific knowledge of this problem with GHOST can offer some other thoughts. If no response in a few days, I will try to figure out how to do the registry changes they discuss. I will keep your and the "thread" updated as other responses occur. Thanks again

Paul

The problem still exists for me. Only good news is that the Ghost incremental backups that are made, even with the Volum Shadow Copy error message displaying, seem to work okay. That is, I have used them to reinstall to a formatted drive. Weird. Still want to know what is going on in this regard, why we get these error messages. I also have Ghost 14 installed on a Windows XP machine with no problems. Anyone else out there with some insight?

Paul S

Hi iopman,

Volume Shadow Copy is a Windows service which creates snapshots of the system files at a regular time intervals. These snapshots are used by most of the backup programs(including Norton Ghost) which create backup while Windows is running. Windows System Restore also uses these snapshots. For more info, you can refer to this WiKi link.

The error you are receiving is about the failure of Volume Shadow Copy. I dont think It will cause corruption of the backup images. The backup images which you have created are absolutely valid and you can use them in case of system failure.

To fix the Volume Shadow Copy error, you can try by registering the few dll's using the following commands:

regsrv32 ole32.dll
regsrv32 sqlvdi.dll

--Vinod

My apologies for the typos..

The commands are as follows:

regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 sqlvdi.dll

I am not sure whether these files are used in Vista or not.
