It wasn't by far the earthquake that caused the damage, buildings that were not old or strengthened coped really well, as seen by all the video footage of people in the buildings, without really been shaken to bits, The Quake only had a Peak Ground Acceleration of 0.82 G Force.
It was the Tsumani that caused all the havoc and damage with it's power.
A Map from my PC that gets updated showing the yellow dots being the Foreshocks (oldest) and the Red dots being the latest.

This article is really misleading, why.The guy did not have his "One for the History books" Prediction come true.Mr Ring predicted firstly that a 8.0 Earthquake would hit Christchurch on the 20th of March give or take 3 days.An 8.0 shake, that is bigger then the 7.1 in Sep or 6.3 in Mar. This got people so scared that people and families left Christchurch in fear, to places like Geraldine, Hanmer Springs, Timaru..................
An 8.0 would not be an aftershock either, if it's in the same sequence it would become the Mainshock and all previous shakes of 5,000 + back to the 7.1 would become foreshocks.Mr Ring then changed his story to it would happen anywhere in North Canterbury or Marlborough, and after that anywhere within 500km's of the Alpine Fault which would mean in a straight line as far North as Hamilton in the North Island.
On the 20th we had more than that aftershock and we are getting aftershocks near everyday, Just like I predict that the Japan region will get an aftershock today.Predicting this would be like predicting it will rain in India during the Monsoon season.
We have had 18 shakes 5.0 and above and 73 shakes 4.5 and above.
The fear he gave people in predicting another major earthquake that did in the and not happen is despicable on people who are already struggling with the after effects of 2 major Earthquakes (one an aftershock) and thousands of aftershocks where most have a shallow depth.
I can't get hold of the newspaper in the UK, but I wonder if they look into their story subjects,
The guy in the past belived the moon caused Aircraft to crash, CO's does not go into the air (atmosphere) and has a book out called Pawmistry (how to read your cats paws.

People are actually giving the guy credit for predicting a quake (inaccurately, at that) within the aftershock period of a major quake??? Life for charlatans is becoming way too easy. Anyway, I am sure the Mayans had this one predicted long before Ken Ring...... ![]()

Yes the UK, and maybe USA media are,
Even though sciencists have quicky ruled him out, including mathaticians who worked out he is predicting an earthquake for 250+ days out of 365 days of the year.
I meant Feb 22 for the 6.3 shake not Mar as in my previous post

Bugger I wish I could figure out a script to run, that would stop the Earthquakes (Aftershocks).
