Re: Forum Software Update

[ Edited ]

Hi Tony:

Upon composing a PM, I have noticed that the "auto-fill" for the member name does not work aside from a select few. If I should type in the first couple of letters from your name, it works. If I should type in Reese's name, it doesn't.

Also, when I compose a post using the separators as shown below, and click send, it is considered to be Invalid HTML and then auto-corrects it.

What do you think?

Thanks.

Re: Forum Software Update

Tony,

A couple of quickies while we have your attention <s>

The screen that pops up when you click on the Insert/Edit link has changed slightly but:

When it comes up the http:// which is in that box by default is no longer highlighted so if you are pasting in a complete URL you have to delete it or highlight that part first before you paste or you get a double http:// .... When it was highlighted by default all you had to do was CTRL + V on the keyboard and it was replaced. Now you have to get the focus in there first which is usually a mouse operation ....

The Open in selection has not been changed to in a new TAB as when it came up before I thought there was general agreement that it was the best choice to avoid people losing their place in a thread or in the forum when taken to a new source.

Any chance of making these changes?

Re: Forum Software Update - Font Problem

[ Edited ]

Hi Tony,

Is there any update as to when the remaining problems will be resolved?

Also, regarding the font problem I mentioned earlier in the thread I found a new variation of that problem. If you type a post with some blank lines and then do addtional formatting, blank lines can be eliminated.

Take the following example.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This is line one with a blank line below.

This is line two which should have a blank line above. I first typed four lines and then highlighted all 4 and changed the color. The blank line in between the first two sentences was removed.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In other words when you highlight lines to do some additional formatting such as changing the color, font, etc and this includes one or more blank lines, the blank lines get removed.

Thanks

Allen

Hi Tony,

Actually let me clarify the above issue a bit more.

If there is more than one blank line, only ONE gets removed. For example above this there should be TWO blank lines but the formatting removed one of them.

For each block of one or more blank lines one gets removed when you highlight a section which includes those blank lines.

Edit: So this is not consistent. In this case BOTH blank lines got removed but when I did this earlier only one of them was removed.

Thanks

Allen

Hi Tony

Thanks for making it easier to see where the announcements end and where the threads begin. That darker division line helps a lot.:womanhappy:

Allen,

I can confirm about the messing up of blank lines you insert in text ....

Re: Forum Software Update - Font Problem

Hi Tony,

There are some other issues which were raised on the previous forum software which I see are still present in the new software.

1. Renaming a JPG image as a .txt allows it to be uploaded, thereby bypassing the workflow where a moderator has to approve the image before becoming visible. Depending on how one has their browser configured it would allow this renamed text file to be rendered in the browser which then creates a security issue. Please see this thread and this thread.

2. Ctrl+LMC on a URL which leaves Symantec/Norton domain does NOT present warning message to user. Please see this thread.

Can you advise if these can be looked into? Any timeline for any of the other fixes for issues reported in this thread?

Thanks much

Allen

Re: Forum Software Update - Font Problem

Hi Tony,

Sorry, somehow I forgot to mention another thing which is still no better than the previous version of software.

I have raised this issue before in this thread and it would be nice to know something will be done about this.

The Add Attachment link at the bottom only deals with .txt or .log files, all of us old timers understand why this is.

The method by which a user must attach a .log or .txt file vs an image (JPG) is completely counter-intuitive. This confuses virtually every new user on the forum. The reality is that the natural inclination is to use the Add Attachments link at the bottom for ALL files.

This will be the default choice for any user who has not already learned the secret the hard way.

The other thread suggests one of two methods to resolve this:

1) Update the Add Attachments link to deal with images and somehow have anything ending in JPG, etc get added to the workflow requiring moderator approval. OR

2) At the very least have some decent help so that the user will know how to attach images. One possibility could simply be to add an Add Image link right below the Add Attachments link and forget that green tree symbol which the vast majority of new users don't notice.

Thoughts?

Thanks much

Allen

Re: Forum Software Update

Hi Tony

I'd still like to know how to remove my avatar as per my previous post here. Any suggestions?

As for the Forum software, the truncation of the Thread 'Subject' is still annoying (too many Subject lines end with '...'). Please advise on how to fix this.

Thanks

Re: Forum Software Update

Firefox vs. Rich Text Editor.  When selecting the "Preview" tab Firefox alerts that the information is about to be sent unencrypted and asks if it should continue.  If you rethink your decision to preview your post and click "Cancel" the page does not appear to change, except things no longer work.  The "Preview" tab is selected but is not functioning.  The "Cancel" and "Post" buttons are grayed out and unusable.  Clicking the "Rich Text" or "HTML" tab does nothing.  You are trapped in a dead Rich Text editor.  The only way out is to use the browser's "Back" button which takes you back to the original thread, losing your intended post in the process.
