Hi there:

Let's say that I would like the current forum page to refresh itself on a regular basis, like every 30 seconds or so - is it possible?

Yes.  Got to My Profile (when you are logged in) > Preferences.  In the middle of the page, General Settings > Automatic Page Refresh Interval.  The ? will give you a brief help pop up about this feature.

Apart from that CTRL + F5 forces a download refresh with IE anyway.
