Re: Last User Activity Problem

Hi Allen K,

Ok, now for an explanation of what this latest round of posts was all about.

Thanks to SendOfJive we now have the trigger for this issue nailed down and it is 100% reproducible. In short, the problem is caused by the sending of email alerts to a user who is being responded to.

Background first. SendOfJive normally does not subsribe to threads or have his profile configured to send email alerts when a user responds to him.

So in PM we worked together to do some controlled testing. The steps taken were as follows:

1) SendOfJive subscribed to this thread and configured his profile to send email alerts when he was responded to.

2) I responded to one of his posts, first verifying he was Offline and took note of his last activity time.

3) After posting, I refreshed his user profile page and noted that his time of Last Activity now matched mine.

4) Again working through PM we performed a second test. SendOfJive logged off and I responded to his post again. Once again his time of Last Activity updated to mine.

5) As the final proof - SendOfJive unsubscribed and configured his profile to NOT send email alerts. I then responded to his post again and his time of Last Activity did NOT update to match mine.

Email alerts are definitely the trigger for this problem as this testing proves.

Allen, I trust this will be enough to pursue this issue to resolution? :smileyhappy::smileywink:

Again, many KUDOS to SendOfJive for thinking of this possibility! :smileyvery-happy:

Yeah I guess he is, but he is still a genius for thinking of this possibility! :smileytongue::smileywink:

I'm just glad we nailed this one now. Now all we have to do is wait for the forum software fix. Yes, that was a hint Allen K. :smileywink:

Yes, every time I check my email now, it logs somebody onto the Norton Forums without their knowledge! :smileyvery-happy:  Actually I was pretty surprised that my hunch survived an empirical test.  But AllenM and I ran this test several times and the results were always the same: a user who is subscribed to a thread will have their time of last visit updated every time a reply notification email is sent.  If you are not subscribed, the time stamp does not change.  I think it has something to do with computers....

Hi SendOfJive,

Ah, you are just being modest! :smileywink:

Actually, you know what the deal is? You see, SendOfJive conspired with the forum software vendor and had them plant this bug just so he could come up with the solution and look like a hero!! :smileysurprised::smileyvery-happy:

But, oh these forums are fun! :smileyhappy:

Please stop checking your email:smileysurprised:

Actually I was pretty surprised that my hunch survived an empirical test.

Just proves what I've always thought that a sudden flash of inspiration is worth more than a bucketful of logic.

Well done to both of you - please have the rest of the day off and don't check your email during that time as it will undoubtedly confuse me.:smileyvery-happy:

Hi mdturner,

Now, you've really got me curious. Does your favorite color happen to be blue? You stole *my* favorite color! :smileytongue::smileywink:

Well, now I guess I have to pick a new one! :smileysurprised::smileywink:

Which explains why TomV couldn't see any time change when he replied to my posts in this thread in order to see if my time stamp would change :-) I was and am not subscribed to this thread. In fact, I have turned off the feature which automatically subscribes the user to the thread in which s/he participates :-) Congrats, AllenM and SendOfJive...Let's jive! ;-)))))

Re: Last User Activity Problem

[ Edited ]

BIG THANKS to AllenM, SendOfJive and everyone else that contributed to this thread.    :smileyhappy:

Thanks to the information that was presented here we have duplicated this behavior on test sites and confirmed that a users last activity (date/time) update is triggered when email is generated by the community.

The fix for this will come, but it will not be fast or quick.   I don't have a date at this time. The fix may come with an upgrade that's in testing now, or it may not come until a few weeks after that.
