In the Email Notification of a new message in a Post that you are interested in, could there be a 'View this Message' Link, either instead of, or as well as, the 'View this Thread' Link.
The view this thread link just goes to the start of the appropriate page, so has to be scrolled down.
If you enable say, 20 messages per page, this can be a nuisance.
As the email is in reference to a specific message, I feel you should be directed straight there.

Hi boneidle, there is a way to do this: please read Allen_K's post (the last part) at the link below; it contains information on how to link to a specific post by using the "Highlight this message" function:

For me the link in:
Click here to: View the Thread.
has always taken me to the specific message and not to the start of the page or thread. If you look at the shortcut behind that link:
http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?b
it contains the message ID.
The other two links take me to the beginning of the thread.
I have in fact had it in mind to suggest to Allen K that the wording of the email notification be changed to read View the Message .....
I'm using Outlook Express for the mail and Internet Explorer 7 under XP Pro for this since that's the system I use for email still. What client do you use for email?

Yaso
Have had a look at the Link, but need more time to to go through it.
With reference to 'Highlighting the message' , I might be missing something here, but how do I highlight the message the email is alluding to, before I get the message.
Still working on it.

On all the email notifications I get, all three links take me to the start of the page what the message is in, not to the actual message, although that particular message, ( when I scroll down to it), is highlighted in grey.
I have got it set to read oldest first.
Have you got yours to read newest at top ??
Will change mine later to do that.
Then the link may take me to the last message.
Sometimes I receive multiple notification for the same post when I switch on and retrieve my mails.
If I take them in time order received, I think it would still take me to the top of page regardless,
Perphaps it is not possible to get Browser to go to a specific message.
Click on an old message and see if it takes you to exact message, or latest.

Have found a setting to " Automatically Jump to the First Unread Message in a Thread.
Not quite what I was after, but should be better than before, though I wont be able to use an old notification email to jump to a specific message.
Thanks for replies

Each link takes me to the specific message as one can tell by checking the name of the poster in the email and on the message.
Since the latest first is a toggle and the menu appearance does not change it's hard to tell lwhat one is in but I've changed it during the last two days and it makes no difference to what happens.
You might right mouse click on the link and paste the shortcut into a browser address box -- that will show whether yours includes the message ID or not, and whether it works in the same way when you do that as when you click on the link.
Yaso's message, I believe, was telling how to put a link of the same kind into a message posted here in the forum.

No idea where you found that one.
Note that I use Linear Mode for the Forums and you have not mentioned what email client you use which might make a difference.
Did you try copying the shortcut into the address box? If that works then what you are experiencing would seem to be to do with how your email client interprets the link.

Oops, sorry, boneidle :-D I was thinking of the scenario when you are writing a message and want to embed/indicate a direct link to a relevant post in another thread. I'll have to try out the e-mail notification links myself and wait till someone posts to a thread I have subscribed to and check out the link in the resulting e-mail notification ;-D
Edit: just received an e-mail notification for a thread I had subscribed to; clicking on the links next to "Subject" and "View the thread" take me directly to the post itself.

Yaso
I will send you two
Leave them in your mail In-box, then when they are both there, click on the first one you received and see if it takes you to, and highlight in Grey, that message or just to top of page.
I normally click on " View this Thread".

Yaso
Your second mail.
Am still looking in settings to see if I can change anything else.
