Re: Norton Community website has slowed down

Well, I called upon the power of the gurus and the forum gods did NOT disappoint.  My goodness, the harvest is bountiful.  Not only is SendOfJive setting us up with (what I like to call) the Sound of Jive, even “huwyngr” comes back into the discussion.  Before I “unsheathe my swords” (so to speak) I want to personally thank you guys for coming back in here.  By the way, if I needed to contact you guys directly, do you have an e-mail germane to this forum?  If you do not wish to surrender it, I completely understand.

Hugh, that is very interesting.  I’m running Verizon FiOS at 100mbps.  I’ve been on Microsoft forums, Malwarebytes’ forum, Bleeping Computer’s forum ALL of which loaded pages instantaneously (with XP Professional, IE7).  It is only when I navigate on community.norton.com (again with XP Professional, IE7) that everything grinds to an excruciatingly annoying halt.  Something is definitely NOT jiving (no pun intended Send).  I’m tempted to recommend Google Chrome to PTD.  Anyway, what are everyone’s thoughts on Front Motion Firefox?

Happy Easter,

H.B.

If you wish to contact someone on the forum, find one of their posts and click on their name on the left. On the page that opens click on 'send this user a private message'. The user will find your message the next time they sign in.

I find the same issue as Hammer_Bro. I frequent many different forums that load very fast. Only the Norton Forums are this slow.

Re: Norton Community website has slowed down

HB,

Just after I posted I went to check out a link in an incoming email from NewEgg and had the same blank white screen with "Waiting for newegg.com" on my Status Bar.

The other reason I suspect (for at least a part but not necessarily all the delay experiences) some modification in Windows or in Norton Firewall or ..... is that for some time -- let's say at least 2 - 3 months -- when I boot up in the morning it can be 30+ seconds after the desktop builds its icons (and my desktop looks like a fully loaded Metro Windows 8 since I have nearly as many shorcut icons do websites, documents, utilities and so on as there is room for) before my cable modem shows the flashing lights for the internet connection and an icon on my desktop that uses the internet will function.

Speaking for myself I don't do support (anywhere) via email or by the Private Message mentioned -- the whole purpose of the Forums is public discussion.

Re: Norton Community website has slowed down

Hi Hugh, From my end, I’m not noticing a slower startup experience, and the Internet connects pretty quick. Non-essential background programs have been turned off via MSCONFIG. As for communication, I was thinking to send you a “private message” if it was related to another topic so as to not disrupt the flow of threads you might be engaged in. Basically, a note to direct you elsewhere. Unless of course you don’t mind me crashing a discussion, lol. Additionally, say you are not on the forum for a stretch of time. Norton eventually closes threads, so I would imagine that the only way to contact you would be pm - - thank you Peter. Peter and Hugh, would you be adverse to me adding you guys as “friends”? If you say no, I guess I’ll go back to the corner and sulk. It has come to my attention that SendOfJive is truly epic on this forum. In scope of that, I am appointing “theme music” that I believe “fits” with Send’s avatar image. The theme music is available at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_cSgfG4l54&feature=autoplay&list=SPFDD5E9381CDC9B1B&lf=list_related&... I suggest you ALL listen to it, and pay homage to Send.

Re: Norton Community website has slowed down

Yes -- Norton is increasingly slow at present with long "waiting for Norton.com" even just going from reading a specific message to the forum listing although I ususally have several TABs open to save time on that.

You must think me an antique -- in which case you would be right -- but I don't do facebook or twitter or whatever involves "friending" and although I see a category for that here I've no idea what it does!

If you have a new Topic that does not belong in a thread then the best thing is to create a new Topic .....

If you have some private information to pass on then you can try the Private Messaging system for whoever you like and see what happens but as I said I don't do problem solving via the PM system mainly because is it less efficient.

Nothing personal ....

I agree.
It is best to use the forum for problem solving so we can all learn from the experience.

Re: Norton Community website has slowed down

Hi guys,

Hugh, believe it or not, many YA depts. in public libraries have banned Facebook.  Personally, after my friend got stung by koobface, I lost a lot of respect for the site.  Oh, I could definitely start a new post, but will you guys find it?  I figured a quick pm would absolutely guarantee that your attention is called to it.  Now, has anyone taken the time to listen to the new “theme music”?  By the way, has Send dropped out of this conversation?  I for one cannot believe how “off topic” this has become from PTD’s original concern.  Granted, I have had a “hand in” the Tom foolery (so to speak) but let us FOCUS! (laughs) What did you guys think of my suggestion about a basic html version of this forum?  Is it possible for that to be brought up before a Symantec Employee here?  Next, what were your opinions on me recommending PTD to use G-Chrome?  I hear that browser is superiorly FAST.  Maybe I missed this as well, but, did anyone share their thoughts on Front Motion Firefox?

Re: Norton Community website has slowed down

It appears the main Norton Website has problems as well now.  Trying to view products http://us.norton.com/360/?inid=us_hho_products_topnav_n3606pd results in "Unable to load the page. Please try again later.<br/>Error Code:1334185057095" message.

It appears that Symantec have "fixed" this site until it was broken.

Cheers,  Dave.

Re: Norton Community website has slowed down

Hello Krusty,

Update: Tonight, I visited community.norton.com using XP Professional and IE7, and noticed that load times HAD improved. Before, to click one [1] link took about three [3] minutes. Tonight, maybe about ten [10] seconds. You could say, big deal, 10 seconds. However, when you’re used to Windows 7 and IE8 loading pages in three-tenths of a second (probably less) you definitely take notice of these things. Then again, my experiment (using XP Professional and IE7) was probably conducted at non-peak time for the site, hence, it loaded more quickly. I will continue to follow this. Moreover, (in my testing using XP Professional and IE7) the site was still “catchy”. What I mean by that is when I tried to move the page down, it would temporarily freeze then, after a little bit, it would move the page down. What’s also weird is that even clicking elsewhere in the browser (say going under “Tools” or navigating to another opened tab when community.norton.com is up) things temporarily freeze. I guess because of the complexity of community.norton.com (now, versus the past for the older software) requires a significant amount of more memory thus other elements i.e. menus, tabs etc. will “lock up” (so to speak).

Do you have any thoughts about my suggestions i.e. that Symantec should provide (for users running older platforms like XP and IE7) a “scaled down” version of this forum without all the “bells and whistles” (so to speak) to make for ease of use in order for people like ProTruckDriver to continue to make positive contributions on this forum? Also, what do you think of my suggestion that he should try Google Chrome?

By the way, I went to your link (using XP Professional and IE7) and everything loaded fine. I was able to click into the various Norton products and see the differences with no problem. Maybe it was a temporary glitch? Being that I was using an older browser, I did notice that some of the text was askew. It was very close, and at points overlapping. This is nothing new. Using outdated IE7, I have noticed this with other Websites as well. It seems like older components are “trending” down. All in all, text being slightly askew is NOT enough for me to upgrade software on my laptop.
