Guess it's my turn in the barrel. Got the title error message the first time after doing a manual life update which wanted to reboot upon completion. Did that. Ran another manual live update after that reboot and got the same result. After that reboot I didn't run live update. Then one click support appeared and recommended the Norton R&R Tool. Did that. After the reboots went back to work and one click is with me again. I'm going to try something a bit different this time. I'll report back when it's completed.
Did a control panel uninstall of Utilities15 and 360, rebooted and ran the NRT. Rebooted and installed a new copy of 360 it did an update then I did a manual live update and downloaded 100M+ of data. All were installed [or at least no error messages]. I appear to be back in operation again.

Yeah, that's why I always recommend that slightly more time consuming double-uninstall (Add/Remove plus NRT) in my standard instruction set. Seems to avoid both the occasional accidental CD/DVD driver removal and this sort of "not quite sufficient" removal.
Glad you seem to be back in order with a minimum of angst--and thanks for the report!

It's happening on a test drive so I can ignore it for a while. Went slow and thought I had it right. error message was back just as I was rebooting to change drives. I'll get back to it and see what's going on when I've got a bit moe time.

Oh jeez huh--just when we start to think we've got it figured out!
There are those days when if it weren't for bad luck I'd have none at all
I'm back to work on it and will report back - maybe

Took some time and did some house cleaning. Uninstalled 360, rebooted and ran NRT, rebooted and ran NPE w/rootkit on the full system from safe mode. Rebooted and installed 360 and ran live update until it was happy. Since then I haven't had any problems. Unless something crashes before I sign off this evening I'm going to call this one solved [and keep my fingers crossed]
