In versions 5 and 6, I frequently get email errors when trying to send out an email in Outlook.
I get a pop-up that says "Email Error... 551 virus infected mail rejected (Malformed container violation)"
The email is not infected with a virus, so something is making 360 think it is. Is there a setting that I need to tweak so it doesn't think there is a virus?
Thanks for the help.

Welcome,
Yes, the message is coming from your Norton program but no, that isn't the source. The real source is your ISP. Something about the way you have configured your message is causing their server to reject it. The problem isn't a virus, that message is boilerplate for a few hundred problems which cause the server to reject a message.
If you are 'frequently' getting errors I might suspect that there are some addresses in your address book that are 'malformed'. Another thing that can cause rejection by a server is too many names in an email 'TO:' address [it looks like spam].
Please continue to work with us if the problem hasn't been solved.
Hope this helps.

I'm not sure your answer is right.
My ISP is BellSouth and haven't had any problems until Norton 360 was installed. Now certain friends try to send my wife emails and they are getting an automatic response:
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Did Norton change any settings on the yahoo account?
What do I need to change on yahoo so that my wife can be sure to receive all my emails from her friends?
She's ready to try another product.
I hope you can help.

Same issue starting about a week ago.
Usualy this happend when you Forward an e-mail.
Looks like Norton think that if you forward an e-mail from some direct mailing it's definately spam.
And may be, for some Northon Customers it is, cause they may mark these e-mails as spam.
But... There is created huge problem when you need them, and for example simly want redirect e-mails to different department.

I have just started having the same problem (551 virus infected mail rejected (Malformed container violation) on forwards. to both hotmail and yahoo accounts. My ISP, 1and1, said i have a virus. I ran a full 360 scan and do not have a virus. Also i turned off scan outgoing email and still have the same problem. Please help.

This is not a Norton… Looks like new security rules Outlook or something…
Try to send to your self this wording… and e-mail will be same way rejected.
Change something, and it’s go true.
From: Nobody
To: Noname Somebody (joe@yahoo.com); Joe Nemo <joe@yahoo.com> (joe@yahoo.com);
Spend some times to figured out. May be more simple version possible…

Looks like Security Analyzer wrongfully reprogramed or fail to analyze heathers and content inside Outlook e-mail combining with Anti Spam, Virus, Trust etc. settings. Yesterday e-mails fail true Outlook with System Report,
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

today messages fail true Norton with same 551 number/code.
Can anyone explain?

For those experiencing this issue, have you tried turning off Norton Outgoing Email Scanning? If so, does this resolve the problem?

If you really need send these e-mails, remove heading (To:, From:, Subject etc.) during forward (make sure you remove all of them, not only one) from the body of your e-mail. It’s working only these way right now.

Jeff,
Norton cannot change anything that is not on your computer. Yahoo is a web based service which has been compromised in the past any I expect that it will be again.
To reestablish the security of your web email account I'd recommend that you change the password and all of the security question responses.
A second step might be to consider a free email client like thunderbird. This will then keep your address book safe. It will also scan your incoming and outgoing emails to be sure that they are clean.
Let us know how you want to proceed and we'll be here to help you. Til then
Stay well and surf safe
