Norton 360

Hi all ... my first post here

Why did Norton do away with the ad and banner blocking . I loved the feature in my 2007 NIS version .

I was very dissapointed to see this is no longer supported .

Will this feature ever be returned as i hate seeing all these flashing adds on nearly every web page.

Was also very usefull to stop the kids clicking on all the rubbish ads and downloading who knows what .

Is there any other ad blocking program out there which would do a similar job .

Hi Proz,

Symantec decided to discontinue the pop-up and ad blocking functions in the Norton programs because today's browser's provide effective pop-up blocking solutions. Also,Symantec may have decided to focus their engineering efforts on improving other security features in Norton program.
In addition, the way ads are delivered has evolved on the web and so Symantec had to remove their legacy desktop client based ad blocking functionality.

You can go for Yahoo Toolbar or Google Toolbar which is free for download and includes effective Pop-up/Ad blocking solutions included with it.

The propagation of toolbars (from Google and Yahoo!, for example) that incorporated pop-up and add-blocking capabilities and the shift to concerns with online browsing security allowed us to shift more to our core competencies, which is security.

I hope this clears up the reason for not including it in the latest version. Thanks!

Thats a pity they arnt going to support it ....i dont find any toolbars stop the banner ads .

As someone who found that the adblocking in NIS 2007 was first class I agree with you but I think that the statements quoted have been superceded and that Norton now accept that most modern browsers do not include adblocking although there are third party add-ins that do.

I have used IE7Pro and Opus9 but found both to be overkill and now use one called Selectview.

I think that Norton have -- possibly in the context of the N360 V3 call for suggestions -- said that the matter is open for consideration.
