I've noticed quite a few people reporting this error at the moment so I thought i'd mention it as well.
This evening I was trying to perform a live update but the Norton Activity Map Data and Norton 2011 Web Protection Definitions were failing to complete.
I tried again and this time the Map Data successfulled completed but the Web Protection Definitions did not.
I tried once more but still it wasn't working, so I clicked the Tech Support link which launced the One Click Support.
Shortly after this was a launched, a big error appeared at the top saying "An error has occured with Norton 360".
Below this, it said "Error: 8920,223".
Also in my Norton's Full History, is said "Norton 360 has encountered an internal program error." (Error ID 223, Module ID 8920)
I did a little googling and discovered a comment from a norton professional on the Forum:
"This is an error which will come and go. It's been around for a few weeks now. The updates will run fine for a few days and then it will show up again. Usually, waiting a little while and then trying live update again will resolve the problem. Even if you do nothing, Norton will try the updates again later and they usually go thru then. The failed updates will get to you, but there may be a delay if you don't catch the error yourself. Thanks."
In this case, that happened; I waited a minute and tried again, and the update was successful.
I also re-opened the One Click Support which scanned and said "No common problems were found" so I assume my Norton is now ok.
Looking back in my Liveupdate history, I was suprised to discover this has happened quite a number of times that i've never been aware about and normally all these updates are eventually applied later on in the same day.
(I assume as well when Norton says "Your norton product has the latest protection updates" that it really does have everything)
My two questions are:
1) Is my Norton 360 fully updated and ok, despite the error?
2) Is this update error normal? Does it happen often to most users and what exactly causes it to happen?
Thanks.

If you can run a manual liveupdate and it responds: Norton Liveupdate ahs successfully completed. Your Norton Product now has all the latest protection updatess. Then you are up to date.
Actually, it is not normal and usually it does not happen to most users, unless there is some kind of glitch on the Norton Servers or something in between their servers and your system. As you know it has been reported and is being worked.
Sorry for the inconvenience, but thanks for the feedback and taking the time to do the research.

Could the reason behind it possibly be my internet connection?
Sometimes our connection in the local area can become very slow at times before running back to full speed,
much like it was doing earlier this evening.
Thanks for your reply anyway.
I've tried updating my product since then and it appears to be working fine again.

If it were you internet connection being slow, I believe you'd get a warning that your connection timed out and also Norton may say the download failed, not the actual application of the downloads.

cupcake,
I've been offline since briefly this morning and ran LiveUpdate about 30 minutes ago. It failed with critical updates, the third item in details, and FixIt reported that error message but seemed not to fix it.
I read the linked article, decided to run LiveUpdate again instead of waiting and it ran perfectly through to completion with the missing download.
FWIW -- I see others reporting this over in NIS/NAV about 5:10

Mine seems to be working fine now.
Its automatically updating and when I do a manual Live Update that works fine.
Is there anyway to check the automatic updates are updating successfully as I don't think they are listed under
Live Update in the History section. Not that I can see anyway.

Sorry I think I got confused.
On the Norton Homepage where it says Definitions Update, thats just the virus definitions isn't it?
All the other updates (e.g. Pulse updates, Map Data, Web Protection Definitions, etc..) are showing under LiveUpdate under the Norton History aren't they?
Thanks! :)

Just keep trying it took over 4.5 hours before the one failed update finally updated for me.

Its all working fine now actually thanks.
I tried again a minute later after the failed one continually didn't work but then it successfully installed.
Virus Definitions are being updated regularly and all the other updates are working fine now too.
Thanks for everyones help! ![]()
