Backing up to DVDs not working anymore

Before I renewed my Norton subscription few months ago, I backed up regularly using Norton and DVDs.  About 2 months ago, I realized I was not getting any Norton automatic notifications indicating it was time to back up.  I checked backup settings and discovered why.  Apparently, automatic notifications are no longer available for CD/DVD backup.  No problem but here comes the problem.  I've been trying to do this manual backup for 2 months with no success.  It appears to not be working.  The Backup window opens.  The word "starting" appears under Status with the little spinning "wheel" or whatever it's called.  However, this continues for hours on end.  The progress bar never moves.  I can only assume it's not doing anything; it's stuck or something.  Please help if you can.  I run Windows Vista 64 and Norton 6.2.0.9.

Re: Backing up to DVDs not working anymore

Mladyz2012,

Welcome to Norton Community!

I'm sorry for the trouble you had with backup in Norton 360. Please try the instructions in the following KB to update/install gear drivers:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?docid=kb20080929165146EN_EndUs...

Restart the computer & then try to run backup again. If the backup fails again for DVD, try to backup a single file to any of the internal/external drives & report back with the results.

Thanks,

HarryP

Re: Backing up to DVDs not working anymore

I followed the link provided by you but DVD/CD backup still not working.  How do I backup a single file to an internal/external drive?

Just to eliminate the obvious -- does the DVD drive work for other functions?

What kind of disks are you using? It is recommended not to use the RW type that can be re-used since they are not as reliable.

If there's a problem with the workings of N360 I'm sure you will be helped to resolve it but may I make the suggestion that if you have a spare hard drive, preferably external, then it is much better to do the automatic backup to that and then from time to time to copy the backups from the hard drive to DVDs if you feel more secure.

Usually it is much quicker to backup to a hard drive than to a DVD.CD burner and you don't have to be there to load additonal disks if the backup is too large for one.  From ahard drive backup file, most software for burning to DVD or CD can automatically break down a large file into the right chunks for either DVD or CD and you can take the time to do that when it is convenient for you to be at the computer ....

Just a thought but not intended to stop you getting to the bottom of the problem.

Re: Backing up to DVDs not working anymore

BTW, just opened my iTunes only to be informed that the registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs is now missing as a result of installing that fixcd software.
