I read a lot of forum entries, where people are requested to reinstall their product; which I guess, at some stage leaves them without security for a short period ?
How safe is it to be out there on the web, downloading removal tools and reinstall software, etc; with no security suite ?

Every user should download first the suggested applications and disconnect from the net, during the resintall process only.
Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 x64 Hungarian, Norton 360 v20.3.1.22, Norton Utilities 16

One other suggestion is to download the application from authorized official sites and not from some unfamiliar sites.

The best procedure in such situation can be:
1. Download the necessary removal tools and new software update(installation file).
2. Disconnect from the Internet(unplug the network cable).
3. Run the removal tools, and install the new software update.
4. Connect to the Internet.
5. Activate the new software update, run LiveUpdate to get latest virus definitions and then run a Full System Scan(to ensure that your computer is completely secure).

I put this message on the forum, because I've noticed in my retail IT outlet, an AV scratchcard (not Norton); whereby, if you have a brand new PC, you download from the AV site and use the id number on the scratch card, to enable the AV.
I would of thought that Netbooks, as a 2nd of 3 installs would load in this manner. Download from site, using the product key to enable. I buy into the idea that, you keep x2 PC's seperate; not downloading to one and then transferring to the other on a USB Flashdrive/Memory Stick.
I was interested in the download new, before uninstalling old; because I'd have thought you might incur the x2 AV conflicts.
I guess if you've got no AV and the web is the only way forward, it's the only option available. But, is it a safe option ?

You have two options in this situation:
1. Download the installer on an other machine, and transfer it to your new pc with an USB key, or CD, etc.
2. If you have no other PC, only go to the site you have to, don't open any other sites, download the exe, and close the browser. Disconnect from the net, run the installer, activate the product and connect to the net, download latest virus defs and updates. When you have a little idle time between/after the software installs run a full scan with the AV software.

Since Norton products are downloadable online. I guess it's okay to download from the site and subsequently install, then run a full scan.
Thanks to all. AK
