Can Norton clean my computer?

Is Norton 360 a virus removal tool?  As you can probably tell, I know little about this, but I am fairly sure that I have a virus on my computer, and I need to remove it, and then install a more secure program than my current software, sold by a competitor.  How can I clean my computer before actually installing Norton 360?

Re: Can Norton clean my computer?

If you have a virus then that sometimes prevents the isntallation of a security program so don't try to install N360 on an infected computer.

Do you have Norton 360 already on a CD?

If so you can turn off the PC and insert the CD in the CD drive and then switch on the PC, watching for a message on what keys to press to boot from the CD. Then if you catch that in time you can run Norton 360 from the disk and see if it does catch the infection.

But there are stronger ways of trying to do this using a free tool you can download that is good at removing infections but I'll let someone else guide you through this since I have to go off line now.

Could you please say whether you have another PC you use to come here and could use to download the free tool called Malwarebytes ?

And also to get you the best advice, would you give us some more information about your system:

What version of Windows are you using including Service Packs and whether 32 bit or 64 bit as well as the Name and Version of the Norton product that you have -- is it Norton 360 V4 or V5 ?

What makes you think you have a virus? What you experience may help deal with the problem.

Please also say what internet browser you are using -- name and version number ...

Re: Can Norton clean my computer?

What I would do is download Malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and run that first. If you are unable to download Mbam try Hitmanpro http://www.surfright.nl/en/products/. Norton also has Power Eraser http://security.symantec.com/nbrt/npe.asp?lcid=2057. Try any or all of these links and scan your computer. Do this in any order you want all are very effective. If all else fails I would download Avast Free and do a bootscan. I am not a fan of Avast but it has been known to load on a infected system. Then you would need to uninstall it and install Norton. Norton is MUCH better.

Good Luck and keep us updated. There are may Members here with vast knowledge that can help.
