Cannot get rid of the Norton add-ons in Firefox / automatically enabling themselves on system reboot

Hello,

I bought Norton 360 about 6 months ago and have been pleased with it.  The only thing is, I didn't like the toolbars it installed in Firefox; Norton IPS and Norton Toolbar.  My solution was just to disable those two add-ons, which worked up until a few days ago.  Now whenever I restart my computer, when I open up Firefox they'll be automatically enabled again.  I click "Disable" and they'll go away for the duration of that session on the computer but the next time I restart they'll be back and enabled again.

At this point I tried to uninstall the Norton add-ons but the "Uninstall" option is greyed out.  I googled how to uninstall the Norton add-ons and found a few results (namely these two pages: http://tinyurl.com/toolbarfix01 and http://tinyurl.com/toolbarfix02) but after following the step-by-step instructions they provided I was still unable to successfully permanently uninstall them.  My feeling is that the instructions found on those sites would have worked prior to whatever change was made so that the two toolbars automatically become enabled on startup...I've found other recent posts (as in from the past few days) from people with the same problem.  Here's an example: http://support.mozilla.com/en/forum/1/594067

Their solution was to get rid of Norton completely, which I do not want to do.  I just want to get rid of the two toolbars, not the Norton 360 program itself.

Anyway, the posts on the Firefox help forums mostly suggest taking the same steps I have already tried that have not worked so I figured I'd come here for help.  What can I do to remove these two add-ons?

Thanks!

After you delete the files in the firefox extensions folder replace them  with 2 empty files with the same names as the deleted files and mark them Read Only, Firefox should ignore the empty files and Norton wont be able to overwrite them on reboot.

Re: Cannot get rid of the Norton add-ons in Firefox / automatically enabling themselves on system re

Actually let me revise my original post:  I don't really need to get rid of the Norton IPS add-on since it's not really an issue for me, it's just the Norton Toolbar 3.7.2 that I want to uninstall.

When I go to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions I see two folders and one file

The first folder is:

{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}

I searched this online and it doesn't appear to have anything to do with Norton.

The second folder is:

{CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0013-ABCDEFFEDCBA}

I searched this as well and it also doesn't appear to have anything to do with Norton.

and the file is:

{8545daff-ad1e-493f-a37e-eed1ac79682b}

Now, the file listed above is what I believe would get rid of Norton IPS if I deleted/replaced it.  But I don't see any other file for the Norton Toolbar, a file that I believe should have the name {7BA52691-1876-45ce-9EE6-54BCB3B04BBC}

I searched that filename on my computer and it came up with no results.  So how am I supposed to get rid of the Norton Toolbar if I can't find that file anywhere?  Note: the Norton Toolbar is still up and running fine even with that file (supposedly) not being anywhere on my computer, so I'm not sure what to do.

Why cant you just go to view/toolbars and uncheck the norton toolbar? If that doesn't work if you navigate to the components folder in firefox do you see coFFPlgn.dll?

No Offense but  I think it is kinda funny that, after all of the posts concerning the inability of Norton to get the Tool bar RETURNED after the Firefox update to 3.6 that you would have the problem of wanting to get rid of it. lol Look around here for all of the tension and negativity concerning the addition of the toolbars. Good  Luck. I looked around on my computer and couldn't find anything about where the Norton toolbar would be. I found the rest of my Firefox extensions but no that one.

Sorry to come in on this thread, but I just noticed that the Microsoft.NET Framework Assistant which I always have disabled for security reasons is now enabling itself after every boot up. Before it stayed disabled, and I was wondering if anyone else who may have had it disabled noticed this. I know this is probably a Mozilla Firefox issue, but I thoought I would check here first.

Funny you should mention the tensions concerning the Firefox 360/Norton IPS toolbar issue as I just PM'ed admin yesterday concerning this very issue, asking if they could tell me if  it is going to be an issue with the next major release of Firefox. As I have got less than a couple of months subscription to 360 left, and I wanted to ensure this was not going to happen again before I renewed my subscription. I cant understand why anyone would want to remove the Norton addons, to me that is just crazy as it reduces the protection. In fact I believe it is because of this very issue that I got my very first malware, in fact I got infected twice within the space of a week, then I decided it would be wise to go back to Firefox 3.5 to get the Norton addons back until Norton sorted the issue out. Seriously in my opinion from my experience it is not wise to have the Norton IPS and toolbar disabled.

It looks like this is probably a Mozilla Firefox issue, it is not only the Norton IPS and Toolbar that is re-enabling itself after restarting your computer, also Microsoft.Net Framework Assistant extension is re-enabling itself after restarting computer. This extension was considered at one point by Mozilla to be a possible security risk, but is no longer considered a risk, although I chose to keep it disabled as I dont feel it is safe. I noticed the Windows Presentation Foundation plugin is still staying disabled, and I believe Mozilla still consider this to be a possible security risk, so maybe that is why that plugin is staying disabled.

reactivate, I could not confirm your findings. I disabled .net framework assistant 1.1 in Firefox 3.6, rebooted, and it was still disabled.

Great, another strange occurance is happening then. For some reason it has started enabling itself  after rebooting.  If this is not the case with you then I can guess it's back to paranoid mode for me. I know some strange things have been happening with my computer lately, I even submitted  Sysprot and GMER logs, but no one said anything about them and Quads did not answer a P.M I sent him to have a look for me, so it is possible there is something on my computer still. Looks like I'm going to have to get a security expert in to take a look for me, either that or it's a complete re-install of windows vista.
