Re: Disk thrashing is killing my productivity!

I misunderstood your << I ran Error Checking on C: (in reboot) but it's still thrashing! >> tht the "it" was chkdsk.

I can't help you on those files since I don't use N360 actively but I'll ask one of the experienced N 360 folk to check in here.

Re: Disk thrashing is killing my productivity!

Try turning off Norton "Insight Protection" in addition to Community Watch.

Re: Disk thrashing is killing my productivity!

Hi dmck,

Just a few things for you to check in addition to what you have already done.

Please ensure that you are in fact in a user account with admin privileges when turning off Norton Communitty Watch.

From the Main page of NSS, go to Tasks > Check Security History > Click on the down arrow behind Recent History and select  Norton Community Watch.  On that page select Clear Entries. Mr Clean started as a code name and is used with Norton Insight as explained in thei link:

 http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:IgYfxR-Wf4QJ:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norton_Insig...

I am am curious if for some reason the function of removing old information is not being acomplished nd perhaps the "clearing of the entires help".  It is a long shot - but better than not trying anything.

Also, your version of Norton Security Suite is outdated.  You can go to this notice to learn how to upgrade to version 6.

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-360/Comcast-Norton-Security-Suite-v6-2-1-5-update-is-now-avail...

Be advised when you click on the link to upgrade from version 5, you will see a popup offering Constnat Guard Protections Suite - please click on the No Thanks and that will reveal the Get It Now which when seledcted will start the download of NSS v6.  You can do an over install, but please backup your ID Safe Data if you use it for log-ins just as a precatuionary matter.

Once 6 is installed run LiveUpdate (rebooting as requested) until LiveUpdate responds "no update found", then reboot one more time.

Please keep us posted.

Re: Disk thrashing is killing my productivity!

I actually had this happen to me on my wifes old XP laptop.

If turning off insight protection and community watch stops the problem, (watch it for a couple days), then you don't want to do an over the top upgrade.  You will need to backup identity safe, uninstall the program, reboot, and then install the new version.

But while you have it uninstalled, you really should address the problem with SP3.  Depending on the reason why you can't install it, there are a couple of updates that address problems with some systems in order to install SP3.

I know of no system out there that can't be updated to SP3.

If you plan on keeping your system for a while, you really do need 1GB or more RAM.  The "sweet spot" with XP is around 750-850MB.  I have never upgraded a system from 512MB to 1GB without the owner being able to notice a significant improvement.

I know RAMBUS is expensive, always has been.  But you can pick up some used RAM from a trused seller on ebay for between 30-80$  (there is no such thing as new rambus anymore).

I totally agree with Dave - excellent point he provides - do not overinstall if that fixes it.

If that fixes it you will be better off following these instructions:  http://forums.comcast.com/t5/Security-and-Anti-Virus/How-To-Uninstall-Reinstall-Norton-Security-Suit...  bearing in mind what I have suggested in my last post in regards to CGPS (No Thanks) and the LiveUpdate.

Thanks Dave for the info!

They both are (and have been) turned off.

Re: Disk thrashing is killing my productivity!

I do appreciate all the suggestions and will upgrade when I have a few hours.

However, no one has explained what causes these files to update so frequently.

Or, better yet, how to schedule or disable them.

Re: Disk thrashing is killing my productivity!

First, your software is out of date; update to the current version before troubleshooting anything.

Second, your computer is 10 years old--that's 133 in people years (using Moore's law).

As for the source, you mentioned OE6 downloading from multiple [POP3] accounts seems to trigger it; do you have Norton spam protection enabled?  If so, disable it to see if the issue abates.
