I’m using Norton 360 Version 6.2.1.5 and Windows live mail for my email software.
I used to get alerts from the email scanner fairly regularly but it hasn’t picked anything up since the end of January according to the security history. The email scanner is definitely switched on in the settings but I am beginning to worry that it may no longer be working.
I was using V5 when I first noticed this, but the upgrade to V6 didn’t seem to help.
Is there anyway to check or test that Norton is scanning my incoming mail?

Welcome,
Open your Norton program, click on settings -> Network and review your settings there. Your email scanner is there. Live mail is web based so your Norton program will not be able to protect you. It can onlly protect what is on your system. If you are not having any problems then don't worry. If you are then you might want to consider getting one of the free email client programs, like Thunderbird, and running it on your computer. This will allow you to keep your addressbook behind your Norton firewall. It will also scan all of your incoming mail for problems before it is allowed to reside on your drive.
Keep us posted

Hi Mykeprime,
Is WIndows Live Mail configured to connect to the incoming email server using POP3 port 110, or some other port? Norton can only scan that port, and many ISPs are now requiring the use of other, encrypted, ports instead - so if you changed your configuration back in January, that may be why you are not seeing any activity. Of course, all attachments are scanned by Auto-Protect on access, so you are still completely protected, even if incoming email scanning is disabled.

I'm not seeing any email mail options on the 'My Network' settings screen.
I'm using the Windows Live Mail program that's installed on my computer (forgive me if that makes no difference, I'm not really sure how it works) and have been for a long time. I was using it back in January and received Nortons alerts when using it.
I tried with outlook 2003 (which also used to give me the alerts) but, again, I haven't seen anything from Norton.
The incoming port is definately set to 110

I don't think Norton integrates with Windows Live Essentials e-mail client. It does integrate with Outlook and Outlook Express; however, if you use the Hotmail Connector with Windows Live (which may be how WLE e-mail client works), I don't think Norton can scan e-mail retreived that way.

It was definately working with the live mail I'm using, I don't think It's been updated since then. It used to work on outlook too, but again, it hasn't come up with anything (I check the same mail on outlook periodically).
I've just installed thunderbird to see what happens with that

It is quiet but is there any other indication that it isn't working (getting spam)? It could be that Microsoft improved its spam detection.

Hi Mykeprime,
I assume you are talking about virus scanning rather than AntiSpam, as the latter does not give alerts. When you access email message attachments, they are scanned by Norton Auto-Protect. If you aren't getting alerts from Auto-Protect or Full System Scans, then the explanation for your situation must be that you just have not received any malicious attachments lately. Even if email scanning was disabled, these other protections would alert to any malware.

I still get spam, but yeah I do mean mainly virus alerts.
The warnings used to pop up as soon as new messages were recieved by my email program, is that what you mean?
System scans have never popped up with anything, so that's a relief. But it does seem very strange that I have had nothing for months when I used to more often.

Well, if email scanning was allowing malicious attachments through, then Auto-Protect would be alerting you every time you opened one of them. Since Auto-Protect is not finding any threats, it is clearly because there are none. Perhaps whoever's system had been compromised to send the earlier malware has been cleaned up??
