Check out Neil Rubenking's review of NIS 2010 in PC Magazine. He was pretty thorough with explaining the new features.
What he had to say about the Firewall:
Well-Rounded Firewall
As expected, based on past performance, Norton's firewall passed all Web-based attack tests. Its program control never pesters the user with heavy-duty security questions. Instead, it allows Internet access for known good programs, deletes known bad programs, and keeps an eye on the behavior of unknowns. That means you never get a confusing query from the firewall.
I typically test for advanced program control by running leak tests—utilities that exercise sneaky techniques used by malware to evade normal program control. Norton's firewall doesn't react to these because they have no actual malicious payload, though AutoProtect blocks some as known nuisances and SONAR blocked others based on behavior.
Norton includes specific behavioral signatures to help it block attacks on almost 700 known vulnerabilities in browsers, the operating system, and other programs. It also recognizes and blocks well over a thousand Web-based exploits. I tested it using the Core IMPACT penetration tool and it blocked every sample exploit I threw at it. A tiny temporary window announced each blocking event even when the up-to-date test system wouldn't have been vulnerable. Clicking that notification opened a new window with tons of technical detail about the attack.
The firewall is totally tamper-proof, as far as I can tell. It actively blocked all my attempts to kill processes, disable services, change essential Registry entries, and more. Malware is not going to switch off this firewall's protection.—

Does anyone know what improvements (if any) that have been made in NIS 2010 or the upcoming N360 v4?
What version 4???
I have reviewed the testing done by matousec.com with NIS 2009 (16.2.0.7) where it only received a rating of 66% in 8 levels of testing.
NIS 2009 is build 16.7.2.11
That doesn't even come close to the 80% required to meet their standards for recommending a firewall. Are improvements being made or should I disable the N360 v3 firewall and use the free PC Tools Firewall Plus 6.0.0.69 which received a rating of 99% in 10+ levels of testing?

The one that should be entering beta testing in about 2 months.

I was referring the the build that was tested by matousec, not the current build.

Hi,
The Norton Firewall is excellent in all Norton Products, but you have to make sure that you stay up-to-date with the Latest Version, e.g. Norton 360 Version 2.0 > Norton 360 Version 3.0, for your computer. There is nothing to worry about, as Norton's Firewall is of the Highest Standard, as are the Intrusion Prevention Component in Norton 360 Version 3.0 and N.I.S. 2009 and 2010.

Of course. My Message was if you have the Default Settings for the Firewall and Intrusion Prevention; in other words, if you just install your Norton Product and don't touch any of the Settings. Sorry for not pointing this out in my last Message.
