Google search results hijacked

Hi,

Thanks in advance for your reviewing this issue.

I've read several responses and understand a good place to start after a full scan is to provide the HiJackThis log.

It's attached below.  I would appreciate any insight into what is causing the search results to redirect.  Please advise if you require more information.

Re: Google search results hijacked

Hi Bfarrell2804,

Welcome to Norton Community!

The following entries in your Hijackthis log seems to be malicious:

C:\WINDOWS\ALCMTR.EXE
O2 - BHO: AskBar BHO - {201f27d4-3704-41d6-89c1-aa35e39143ed} - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar.dll

Re: Google search results hijacked

[ Edited ]

Hi

Please for Now don't touch  these in removing with hijackthis, (though shouldn't harm) BUT  especially don't delete the files

C:\WINDOWS\ALCMTR.EXE, which as I keep saying about the first section of the log, can't be ticked in Hijackthis.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

This is to do with the Realtek Audio software / soundcard, which may not be able to work properly after deleting the some of the program files.

To disable it to see if it make a difference for better or worse, so it can be enabled later on if need be please use "msconfig" startup tab.

If it is some sort of bad Malware, please allow Malwarebytes, Nortron and /or SuperAntispyware with updated defintions and full scans to run and detect whatever it finds, see if they detect a fake version

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/ALCMTR.EXE-240.html

http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/alcmtr.exe.html

This entry also belongs to Realtek for information purposes

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcWzrd] ALCWZRD.EXE

Re: Google search results hijacked

Thanks Quads.

OK.  I've performed all that you recommended including disabling alcwzrd.exe and the askbar toolbar.

During this process Microsoft Defender pops up and reports a malicious threat and identified:  trojan:win32/alureon.gen!U which is a results redirect threat. I removed it again.  As I have had to do a couple of times before.  This appears to be the culprit.

The redirecting is intermittent.  Sometimes it works fine.  Other times I receive a blank page showing the following error:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

I run the search again and click on the same hyperlink and may connect to the correct site, redirected or get the same message.

Also, I've used a number of protection products and am concerned they may have interferred with each other.

Your expert advice is welcome.

[ Edited ]

Malware is still present.  I've observed the following:

After selecting a hyperlink from a google search the IE address icon will change to these odd icons and often redirect to Toseeka.com and other random sites.

Note the loopy icon and the green globe icons below.

Re: Google search results hijacked

Hi

I will not remove Malware on this forum any longer using programs to detect / fix which file is involved, using multiple programs to log and fix.

You will have to go to a Forum with Malware removal rules and guidelines for further help.

Re: Google search results hijacked

Hi bfarrell2804,

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/ is a good forum to get help on. There are also a multitude of other good forums out there. Keep in mind though that the people on these sites are mainly volunteers and that it could take a little while for you to get help depending on how much they have to do atm.

Re: Google search results hijacked

Yep

Look for Forums who like Bleeping PC, Tech Support Guy, MajorGeeks.......... have people trained in using the Advanced / scripting tool, also they will also have some sort of rules like

Only People as part of the Malware Removal Group or Moderators are allowed to help people with logs and other programs. Anyone else should refrain from posting to another user's thread.

There are a few with policies like above

This is so that due to the fact more advanced techniques are usually required not just "Install MBAM,........................" It protects the users PC from things that shouldn't be done, or that shouldn't be done as it will interfer with a Program that will be used.

DSL Reports also has a highly regarded Security Cleanup Forum that regulates itself as Quads has described, so the threads are one-on-one with experts.  If you go there, be sure to follow the procedures in the Mandatory Steps Before Requesting Assistance link before posting.
