My computer shuts down and it doesnt turn completly off but the screen goes black and it goes off line so i know this because the internet button turns red..i have to completely restart the computer to get back on because the screen will not show up no matter what i do..When i go and look at norton history it always says i was attacked medium threat...So i know the computer screen shutting off has something to do with this..It has happened over fifty times in the last few weeks and everytime there was a threat just before the screen shut off...i can post what is in my norton history and maybe someone can make sense of why this is happening...That would be great..thanks ahead of time.
Okay i rethought if i should post my recent history.....i dont want some hacker getting my ip address....Can someone tell me what i should do here..i am not very computer literate..thank u.

Hi destinystar,
Can you post the name of the threat that Norton is detecting? Because it is showing as a medium risk, I suspect you may be seeing a Norton Product Tamper Protection event, which would probably not be anything malicious.

I'm running into this same issue as well, and there are NO THREATS. I paid a professional technician run a complete virus/malware check in safe mode on my computer (the only way it stays on) as Tech support determined it was a software issue and not covered by warranty. When we go to normal mode in about five minutes, the computer automatically shuts off. the only new software installed in the past day is Norton 360.
The OS is Windows Vista. Suggestions on what to try quickly to fix this? Since the computer only remains on for a few minutes, there's not enough time to uninstall Norton.
Thanks.

It says unauthorized access blocked..medium threat...then it says target program files norton security...the pid target number is always different and the actor pid is always different...
It happens alot when i am playing a game on facebook...and bang everytime the computer shuts off..well down not completely off ..its got a medium threat in the norton history just before it happens...
I know nothing about this stuff is someone trying to get access to my computer or not..?

Hi destinystar,
You are not being attacked. The "actor" in the Norton Product Tamper Protection log entry is almost always a legitimate program running on your PC that has tried to access a Norton file or process. These access attempts, even those initiated by Windows processes, are always blocked by Norton in order to prevent any compromise of your protection. Usually, a blocked program will continue to function normally, but some software, particularly if it is poorly written, will get pouty if prevented from accessing anything that it wants, and such a program might hang. That is why these events are logged - to troubleshoot issues like this in order to help determine if there is a conflict with one of your applications.
There are two possibilities here: Either a program is being blocked from accessing Norton and it is refusing to go on working because of that; or the Norton Product Tamper Protection event is only coincidental to the program hanging - the program could be locking up for other reasons unrelated to its attempts to access Norton. While it is possible to test this by turning off Norton Product Tamper Protection in your Norton settings, I don't think I would recommend doing so in the case of a Facebook game - it might be a little risky. But if you are sure that the "Actor" is a safe and legitimate program, you can temporarily disable Tamper Protection to determine if it is the cause of the hangs. Be sure to re-enable Tamper Protection after troubleshooting, because it is a critical component that protects Norton from outside interference.
There is no way to exclude specific programs from Tamper Protection monitoring, and Tamper Protection is important. If NPTP is causing your game to crash, I would seriously suggest finding a different game.

well i thought about that but if this is the case...why does it only shut off the screen to black when i am about to win? Or after i have done alot of work and I am at the end of cropping a picture..? Its almost like someone is on my computer and watching me and doing it as a bad joke. ( not to be paranoid) but it never happens when i am reading or doing something boring. Also just before this happens i have weird connections show up...from ports that are known for remote connection..Also block lmnr steathed has shown up just before...so this is what makes me believe something else is going on...And also it says your network protection is no longer being protected and then you are now connected to a new network protection ..all of this happens just before these attacks in norton history logs...
i hope this helps you be able to help me...i almost won my game tonight four times and four times i was down to one ball and bang off went the screen and sure enough a attack had occured..Also i had a picture i was cropping and fixing. I worked on it for about twenty minutes and was just about to crop and finish it..and bang off went the screen...?
thanks for any help you can give me...again i really appreciate your time or anyone else who might have answers....

The firewall connection log entries you allude to are all normal events that Norton monitors and records. You really need to specify which program is the actor in the Tamper Protection alerts. If it is one program, then it is the likely culprit. If there are several different programs at different times, then it would suggest that the Tamper Protection events are only coincidental and that something else, specific to the monitor or perhaps a driver is acting up.

Yesssssssssssssssssssssssss FINALLY i have been trying to find someone with the same problems.... Every time I run minecraft(a game by popular developer Markus Persson) it will have a Performance Alert in the bottom right-hand corner saying "high CPU usage by Java Platform SE Binary" which is Java running Minecraft. As it happens Minecraft is a very CPU intensive game and my dad thinks I am getting viruses on the computer.
HELP ME PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

This is really different from the Original Poster's issue. What you are seeking is a Performance Alert, not a virus detection. It is merely advising you that something is using high CPU. if you know or expect this then just ignore the warning and continue. The idea of the Alert is to notify you of high CPU acticity when in fact none is expected and which therefore could be indicative of an attack.

If you can tell us the name of the game you are playing and the photo editing software, there might be others that use the same programs that can offer assistance.
Are these noted in the Norton alerts you see in History?
