Internet access blocked for some apps run on non-administrator login

Environment:

Windows XP SP 3

Norton 360 4.0

I'm a software development professional and as such am quite concerned about security.  My XP system has two logins, one called Boss with administrative privileges, and one called Worker without them.  To thwart malware infections I spend 99% of my time on Worker, using Boss only to do administrative tasks such as installing new apps.

Prior to installing Norton 360 there were no problems using apps when logged in as Worker.  After installation though, apps continue to function properly on Boss, but Worker experiences the following problems:

Google Earth - fails on startup with dialog box saying "We are unable to connect to the Google Earth servers to validate your account

Internet Explorer - browsing gives an error screen reporting that "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"

Yahoo! Messenger - fails to sign me in

Other Internet apps like Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, and World of Warcraft aren't affected.

I was an operating system developer for years and had my share of experience in networking.  This one has me scratching my head.  Please help!

Thanks

Rick

Hi rickace,

I would be more inclined to suspect that the Norton 360 PC Cleanup function is overzealously removing necessary cookies for these sites, rather than a firewall issue.

Do you still have v4.0 or v4.1 (updated)?

Please check your IE Options > Advanced > Security to see if the "Check for server certificate revocation" is enabled or not.  Disable it if it is and retry the web sites, please.

Thanks for your reply, but it doesn't compute.  I hope a professional from Norton or a competent forum assistant can advise me how I can remedy this problem.

You are also having problems with sites that do not require authentication?

I would like to suggest that both of these gurus are extremely competent, and quite likely to be of assistance if you were perhaps a trifle more receptive. :smileywink:

Google Earth - fails on startup with dialog box saying "We are unable to connect to the Google Earth servers to validate your account

Internet Explorer - browsing gives an error screen reporting that "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"

Yahoo! Messenger - fails to sign me in

Like previously with posters having problems with Skpe and MSN messenger etc. after installing Norton,

My apologies if my remark offended you.  I do sincerely appreciate your help because this problem has been a real thorn in my side.  It's great to have experienced people staffing the forums because even as a seasoned professional there's just way too much stuff about Windows that I'm unfamiliar with.  Thank you again for answering.

I clicked your link and followed the directions for adjusting the settings on the Connections tab of the Internet Options window.  Apparently the Boss and Worker logins have separate LAN settings.  Worker had Use Proxy Server selected so I clicked it off and hit the OK button which caused IE to hang for several minutes.  I killed it with Task Manager and restarted.  Fortunately the new settings had been registered.  After that IE, Messenger, and Google Earth all came back to life!  Never would I have suspected that changing a setting in IE would affect other apps as well.  How did you even learn something like that??

BTW I'd been using this computer for two years and never had a problem until recently.  Even on Worker somehow a piece of malware found its way in and was popping up weird windows.  I had McAfee on another computer years ago, but wasn't pleased with it. It was hard as heck to uninstall as well.  I ended up on their forums and found a laborious set of instructions that involved among other things deleting stuff from the Registry.  Never again.  During the initial scan after installation Norton 360 quickly found the malicious program and wiped it out.   Good stuff and good tech support.

Thank you and all who replied for your help.  I'm a satisfied customer and would gladly recommend Norton products to other users.

Hello rickace

If at some time in the future, you might have need to remove your Norton product thoroughly, I just wanted to inform you that there is a Norton Removal Tool that will remove all Norton products so that you wouldn't have to go digging thru the registry to remove Norton. Just some information for the future;
