Live Update in Norton 360 v5.1.0.29 - waiting desperately for the software to be up-to-date

Hi friends,

I am new to Norton but I am happy to be there. I installed this software two days ago. I find it good. I tried to update it through my slow network but it seems that it will never be up-to-date. I have tried the Norton updater - 20111117-ver-v5i32.exe for 32-bit machines.

This makes me think that the updating issue has got little to do with my network for even after I have used the Norton offline updater which I installed successfully, Norton 360 says that the anti-virus definitions have been updated today (while before it showed December 2010 or something like that) but when I run Live Update it still has to download about 125MB - almost the same as before the installation of  the full update package.

As you see the patch making Norton compatible with Firefox 7.0.1 has already been installed (v5.1.0.29) and this works perfectly.

Are there any other components that Norton has to update in the downloads?

Before writing this I read the posts on Live Update in http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-360/Error-8920-204-when-running-live-update/td-p/563812.

Thank you for responding.

Joshua

Hi, Joshua,

Unfortunately--given your reported slow connection--since you just installed Norton, it is indeed likely that you will have several large rounds  of LiveUpdates to slog through before the pace will slow to its normal levels. The version you download is a baseline--which was "packaged" for download on a particular date--and ever since that date, there have been glitches and vulnerabilities discovered that need to be patched, new threats identified that must be countered, and new advances made in detection and defensive technologies and methods that have to be applied. And some of these cannot be installed until a necessary preceding update has been applied that is capable of loading them, so this can take several reboots, too.

All of which adds up to a lot of megabytes.

Which, if you're stuck with a slow connection, indeed mega-bites! :smileyvery-happy:

But it's what has to be done to get that baseline install up to the current load that it takes to keep you protected against the latest nasties fielllllded by a clever and adaptive adversary. You pretty much just have to stick with it until LiveUpdate at last informs you that you have the latest updates.

The one thing I can think of that might make this a little less painful under your circumstances comes from another thread I've been helping on, where the user was able to download the update package to a laptop that could be taken to a public Wi-Fi access point...then transfer it to a desktop at home that could not, using a thumbdrive, and run it to install it there. A variant on this strategy might be for you to download the update package to a thmbdrive at work, if you have access to a high-speed connection there, then bring it home to install.

Good luck--and we'll be here if you need us!

Re: Live Update in Norton 360 v5.1.0.29 - waiting desperately for the software to be up-to-date

Hi,

Thank you for responding so quickly. I would like to point out that

1) I have already installed the update package - the version for my machine: 20111117-ver-v5i32.exe and this was done successfully. I downloaded it through my download manager for it is rather rapid.

2) The anivirus definitions now do not seem to get updated - I get this message for virus definitions: STATUS: FAILED TO COMPLETE. Whenever I switch on my computer and I run Live Update, I see that there is a download of more than 125MB to complete like before I ran the update package!

Are there other components to update, beside the antivirus definitions? I did not find an answer for that in your post, or I did not understand whether you meant that. Were you telling me that the update package would solve the update issue in

Norton 360 v5.1.0.29?

I also get the Error: (8920,1240) and was thinking about running the 20111117-ver-v5i32.exe again. If there is another one for 20111118, it will take some time to download. Would you advise me to do that?

Many thanks for your patience and dedication.

Joshua.

Hello Joshua

There is a new  antivirus file that you can download every day. However, there are still parts of the program that need to be updated also. These updates have to come thru live update.. Since you are also getting an error, I  would follow these instructions.

https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?docid=kb20110217223541EN_EndUs...

Please do come back and let us know how you made out. Thanks.

Re: Live Update in Norton 360 v5.1.0.29 - waiting desperately for the software to be up-to-date

Hi,

THANK YOU. I have the Last Virus Definitions Update of this morning (08:15) in Norton and it is 12:48 now. I consider that the antivirus is up-to-date. If you tell me that there are other parts to download, then everthing must be OK. I will wait.

All the best,

Keep going,

Joshua.

MANY THANKS to you for responding quickly. I appreciate your dedication and patience. Keep going. Whatever we do comes back to us multiplied. I ran the update package again.

In PC Security Details I see that virus and spyware definitions are up-to-date. In fact I get the Error Message when I SKIP Live Update while it is running. So the downloads must concern the other parts Norton has to update.

All the best.
