New to the forum, need help please

[ Edited ]

Hi

I was looking for a translation service and went to Babylon.com.....Norton said it was safe, when it installed it changed my search engine from google to search.babylon.com , i uninstalled straight away but the search engine stayed.

I ran a Scan and NPE and utilities but i've a sneaking feeling that somethings still there......What should i do ?

Thanks

Why does Norton say this site is safe when clearly it's not ?....Back to Mcaffee for me i think

Re: New to the forum, need help please

Before we get started there is a few things you need to know about Babylon. They have both a free and paid version of their software. Obviously the free one installs garbage like that since it is a way for them to make more revenue. If you paid, downloade dand installed the paid version obviously this would not happen. I'm not telling you to go buy their stuff though.

When you download things from the internet and gets scanned by Norton it is not easy to tell wether it is safe or not due to this software installing a toolbar that is downladed then installed onto your PC/Laptop. The problem here is your browser got highjacked. Firstly uninstall babylon and everything that came with it. Then go into your internet explorere settings, click on the advanced tab, then click on the reset button under the button that says reset advanced settings. Then back up your registry then go into cmd then type regedit. Use the search feature in regedit and type in babylon. it is best to start of smaller though, so star with bab then go higher eventually typing in the whole thing. When you find anything to do with babylon delete it!

Then update your orton Product while also finding and downloading Norton Power Eraser.  Link to NPE: http://security.symantec.com/nbrt/npe.aspx?&env=beta

Then use Norton Power Eraser and o into the settings and check multi boot check and include root kit scan. do th scan. Once your PC/Laptop has restarted and finished the scan and no erros have been found then I suggest you update yor norton product again, go into settings and change the heuristics level to high for on demand scans. Then run a full scan of your pc.

If yu still think you have some malware on your PC/Laptop after trying what I've said please reply to this thread and I will further try to help you.

Good luck with fixining your problem also!

Re: New to the forum, need help please

IMO Just changing your default search engine to theirs is not an attack that Norton needs to stop automatically. I think most Search sites do it .... Google will, MS Bing will .... and Google Toolbar even has an setting to make Google your defaullt AND to warn you if anyone tries to change it.

I don't think I've come across anyone not saying Do you want to make this your default search engine when you add it to your browser.

And you say you installed something from Babylon .... did you look at every screen that came up because installing something with a Yes please box prechecked [X] is very common .... watch out on Adobe for toolbars or for McAfee.

SInce I've got Google set to warn me I'll go to Babylon.com but I may not ask it to install.

Re: New to the forum, need help please

Thanks Hugh

Yes i hear what you're saying about babylon but what about the other 298 threats Spybot picked up, including 40 trojans. I had an issue with my laptop where these screens would flash up for a milisecond and are gone again, it was driving me crazy, i was updating every day running scans and running utilities continuously but still couldn't get rid of them......since i've run spybot they've gone !.

Shouldn't my paid for service be looking after this kind of stuff for me ?

McAfee also says the site is safe.

I don't know what to make of your Spybot detections.  I have used Spybot for a number of years and what you report strikes me as very odd.  Those sorts of inflated numbers are more typical of rogue programs than Spybot Search and Destroy from Safer-Networking.org.  And Norton missing 40 Trojans?  There has to be more to the story....

WOT is interesting as well - Babylon.com  is shown as having generally excellent ratings but when you look at the reviews, it is bad news.  And WOT's ratings, unlike McAfee and Norton, are based on user reviews rather than testing, so that seems totally confusing.  Anyway, I wasn't trying to champion the Babylon site, only point out that McAfee's rating does not differ from Norton's.

Hi SendOfJive,

I knew what you were saying  :smileywink:  And I agree,  the WOT reviews are interesting as well.  No doubt you have read the Norton Safe Site reviews.  -  http://safeweb.norton.com/report/show?url=babylon.com&product=N360&version=6.1.2.10&layout=Retail&la...

Cheers,  Dave.

Re: New to the forum, need help please

WOT is a community based forum that helps users decide whether a website is safe or not from all kinds of threats. It has in the past been abused but they do fix these problems. WOT's ratings on Babylon is correct even though everyone has a different opinion. Depending on how long you have used your PC/Laptop and your user habits on it I would say most of the threats that were found by Spybot are Tracking Cookies and PUP's.

Another thing is WOT is that, even though they do not seem to do any sort of testing they have many members and independent sources/partners that are reliable in figuring out most of the facts and truths about the website. E.G. Phish Tank helps by warning members on the scorecard page by information them that it is under their list of Phishing websites. Apart from Phish Tank there are countless of other partners that range from services that offer info about spam, adult content, malware list goes on.
