Re: New to the forum, need help please

Well Thanks all

It's gone now that's the main thing....one last point though. I referred earlier to those annoying screens that flashed up for a millisecond and were gone again....i knew something was amiss here and couldn't get to it. I said that they're gone since spybot did the S&D but i do feel that my paid service should be able to deal with this annoying stuff, is there a reason why it couldn't ?.

Thanks again all

John

Without knowing what Spybot detected and removed, it is not possible to answer that question.  Norton would certainly not miss any serious infections that Spybot could detect - so it is more likely a matter of Spybot finding things that Norton intentionally does not look for, such as the PUPs mentioned by Avanquest.  See my explanation of PUPs and why Norton ignores them here:

Re: New to the forum, need help please

I gave up on Spybot years ago but that was when I was given a beta that would not uninstall and they would not reply to my pleas for help.

It seems to me so unlikely that you have 40 trojans and a still normal system that I would consider false positives and most software consider so-called tracking cookes as threats which is not something I agree with.

You've got some well experienced others here so ....

Re: New to the forum, need help please

I do agree that Spybot has more than likely flagged up a lot of "non issues" as probable or possible issues, but once again i'll reiterate that it got rid of nasty stuff i.e. the annoying flashing screens which would appear for a split second and dissapear again. I'm by no means here to trumpet the abilities of SB i'm just a plain joe soap with probably less than average ability when it comes to dealing with this stuff, but i'll say it again that Norton should have dealt with this annoying stuff for me....i was worn out from running scans and updating and running utilities and nothing was working.

I think that's all most people want from their paid service "make the annoying stuff go away please ":smileymad:

Fully understood .... you may have seen another post of mine here about a banner advert that is plagueing Forum users in another place than here in Norton-land. Some of this stuff comes in by the same route as things we would be very upset about if our security software blocked them.

They are often adverts and not malicious stuff and so I don't want my security software to be blocking adverts unless they are actually malicious attacks on my system. I use an adblocker to stop the adverts but there when one annoys me I tell the adblocker don't let that one, or that source, through again.

Some of the flashing may have been part of whatever was blocking them ... which can be in your browser ... and we have to try to distinguish between annoying and dangerous.

Otherwise we are letting our security applications wander over into censorship territory .....
