Norton 360 Back Up Question

I just purchased a NAS (Western Digital My Book World Edition II).  I configured the Norton 360 back up feature to run on the NAS.  I was able to map the network drive and get it to back up to that location.

When I go to look at the back up though it's set up a bunch of jibberish folders and files that I can not open.  Folders are names like {0, {1, {A, {B, etc...

On of the file names is :  00B39BC-520A-4CF5-9786-EB284528BD83}

And they are all like that.

When I click on the files windows is unable to recognize them and open them.  I am running Windows 7 Home Premium.  I'm really only backing up pictures, music and some office documents for the most part.

When I previously backed up with 360 using online storage, the files and folders would retain their same names and formats.

Is this normal?  Or how can I fix it?

Same here with the backed up file names.

When I backed up files to an Ext. drive, and wanted to look at those files using the ext.drive.

I opened up a new folder on the Ext. drive, and restored the ext.backup files  back  into that .

A bit long winded maybe, but at least, they're all up to date if I do a regular backup and  restore.

But I can use it on a PC not using N360.

Perhaps this doesn't answer your question, but just thought I'd mention it.

At least you can check what you've Backed Up.

It has already been suggested to Norton to use the Original names in the backups, but don't know if they will.

I haven't used on-line backup with N360

Re: Norton 360 Back Up Question

Hi.

I am using Norton 360 version 3.8.0.41, and Windows 7 Home Premium.

I believe I may have found the answer the other day.  I can't seem to find the same page now, but it was on some tech support forum.

It appears those files and folders are Norton encrypting the backup files.  I have not done a full restore, but by going into backup, then restore files, the click on edit next to a file type, it will browse to the files and folders correctly.  I have not tried to restore them, but everything seems fine.

Does this sound correct to anyone?

On sort of a side note, by using the method above, it seems to take an exceedingly long time for Norton to actually pull up the files.  For example, when I try and navigate to my music folder to pull up the files, there are times when it will just time out and give me an error.  Otherwise it takes several minutes for the files to pop up.  Is that normal?  (doing this over wireless home network to the NAS to retrieve the files)

Thanks for the replies so far!

Re: Norton 360 Back Up Question

Yes, sounds ok, you can see the info of what files you've backed up.

And you can Restore them ok. either singly or enblock.

You can select to restore to their original location, or to a different location, i.e. a different drive if you want.

N360 does take a long time to load up, when you go into the backup, especially if you have a lot of drives, or data.

I haven't had it  time out yet, but then, I've only done it with USB drives.
