Re: Norton 360 Backup and Archive Bits

About a week ago, I started emailing Norton Technical Support about the problem of Norton 360 V2 resetting archive bits and was given information on how to disable Backup and stop the problem. None of the resets stopped the archive bits being reset.

I then tried online chatting with the Norton staff and at first was offered slightly different resets, which I tried but to no avail.

One technician then persuaded me to give him control of my PC to reset Startup Services and programs. When he rebooted my PC, it failed to reconnect to him because it had lost all memory of my Internet/network settings and so I had to perform a System Restore to get back to where I had been.

The next Chat technician said my Norton 360 must be corrupted and needed to be uninstalled and then re-installed. I did that and turned off Backup but Norton 360 is still vandalizing my hard drive and resetting the archive bits.

From this Forum, it appears that this is a long-standng issue and problem, and I am disappointed that the Norton Technical staff did not tell me this when I first brough my issue to their attention. Is there a solution to this really, really irritating and time consuming problem or do I just ditch Norton 360?

Check this old thread out out. Adam has a fix that works wonders. You must email him though at adam_schepis.

ravanzino,

i was going to send it to you via email since its not an actual symantec support tool. that is why i sent you a private message here (look in the upper right hand corner) and gave you my symantec email address.  mail me there and i'll reply w/ the tool.

Regards,

Adam

Re: Norton 360 Backup and Archive Bits

[ Edited ]

after a clean install and re-installation of Norton360 the recovery process only recovered old files and emails , less than 1 GB (a year old or so).

I have an external HD (460GB Elements) that shows a folder N360_BACKUP (40.9GB), which is probably the folder containing my latest documents and emails. I am devastated that in my hour of need Norton backup let me down. I emailed Norton and all they advise is the same as in the Help facility. It only recovers the same as before. I am unable to access the N360_BACKUP for recovery.

Has anyone a solution to recover the recent docs and emails as I am in desperate need of some of this information.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Gosse

Re: Norton 360 Backup and Archive Bits

Thanks, midjack. That was the suggestion that saved my sanity. I contacted Adam, he sent me the program, I ran it, and since then I have had no problem with archive bits being changed without me changing them. I waited for a while to respond since I wanted to be sure the fix worked this time, and it does. Adam was most helpful but I wish Symantec would keep its Help Desk staff up-to-date not only with known problems but also with the availability of solid fixes to such problems.

Thanks again, and kudos to you and Adam.

Re: Norton 360 Backup and Archive Bits

As a note.  Norton 360 v3.0 has been released and it no longer uses the archive bit for any purpose in backup so you shouldn't see this issue in v3.0.

Adam

Re: Norton 360 Backup and Archive Bits

Hi Adam,

I have the same problem.

I would like to get your workaround.

I don't think I should have to upgrade to V3.0 to get a bug fixed.

Many thanks in advance.

Re: Norton 360 Backup and Archive Bits

Adam,

I would like the work around as well.  I don't want to upgrade to 3.0.  This bits problem has created a lot of issues with some other services that use bits.

Please contact me with work around.
