Hi guys
I have a very big problem, and I hope you can help me
I'm from Germany and I'm using Norton 360.
I had three times contact with the german Norton Chat, but they all couldn't help me.
It's frustrating !!
Ok, now let me explain my problem:
When I wanted to update my 360 Version, the installation failed and an error message came up:
Error: "This process is unable to continue due to a system service that may not be installed or cannot be started..."
Please repair your Windows-Installation !!
Norton Support recommended me, first to delete my old version completely with the removal tool.
I did it, but no success. Unfortunately after the deinstallation, I can't install my original SW from the CD, same problem !!
At the error message there is a link which brought me to:
But, the terminal services and the rpc service has already been started !!
Another guy of Norton did recommend me , that I should repair Windoes XP,
but my system is working fine without problems and I don't want to get more trouble !!
Now I have Norton 360 and cannot use it !! And Norton is unable to help me.
Is there anything what can I do to install Norton ??
I would appreciate if you could help me
Regards from Germany
Werner

This will attempt to repair your Windows files without having to reinstall windows:
Click Start > Run, type cmd and click OK. Click Start, Run and type CMD.EXE
Note: In Windows Vista, you need to open an elevated Command Prompt window. To do so, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
Type this command and press Enter:
sfc /scannow
Please have access to your Windows install CD/DVD as this will want to copy / repair any corrupt files it finds on your system. If after running the repair utility, you still can not install N360 then repair your WMI database as directed below and test again.
Click Start, Run and type CMD.EXE
Note: In Windows Vista, you need to open an elevated Command Prompt window. To do so, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
Type this command and press Enter:
net stop winmgmt
Using Windows Explorer, rename the folder %windir%\System32\Wbem\Repository. (For example, %windir%\System32\Wbem\Repository_bad). %windir% represents the path to the Windows directory, which is typically C:\Windows.
Switch to Command Prompt window, and type the following and press ENTER after each line:
net start winmgmt
EXIT

Hi ( by the way, have you got a name ? )
First thank you very much for your help.
I did everything you recommended, but no success !
The scan procedure didn't find any corrupted file , so no repair necessary
What is supposed to happen, when I rename the repositary directory ?
In my case, nothing happens. I can stop and start the winmgmt service , but ther's no result, wether I have renamed the directory or not.
I still have the same problem as before ! No way to install Norton 360.
What services does Norton need for the installation?
If I can't install Norton, I'm gonna put in the trashbasket, and never I will buy a Norton product again, sorry.
I paid a lot and that's the result. My windows is working without problems. I just installed three new programs,
so Norton is the one which causes problems.
I would appreciate, if there's somebody who has another idea what to do.
Regards
Werner

Ok, I've seen right now, that a new directory Repository has been created.
But as I told you before, unfortunately no success.

The other programs you installed, where they security type programs or just regular non-security programs? What version of N360 did you have previously? What version are you trying to install? (Just trying to get some back ground information here.)
Can you run the following scan to check for any malware that may be preventing the installation?
Please download GMER from http://www.gmer.net and run the program. Select "Scan" and then "Save" the log. Do nothing else with the GMER program as it can harm your system if used incorrectly. Then attach the log file as a text file to a post here. The Add Attachments link is below the orange Post button. It will be reviewed for possible malware and we will get back to you. Again, thanks for your help in this.

Hi
Thanks for the next very quick answer and help !!
On my PC there was Norton 360 Version 2.0
Then Norton informed me about a new version 3.0
I downloaded it and wanted to install it...........see error message.
Afterthen I was recommended to remove all Norton stuff with rhe removal tool.
But then I couldn't install my original Norton 360
I run the SW GMER and the logfile is attached. It seems to be that everything is fine.

Hi
I'm really frustrated !! No comment to my reply last time !! I sent the logfile, no answer !!
Such a terrible product as Norton 360 which cannot be installed on a fine working PC is unbelievable.
My Win XP is working with no problems, there's nothing to repair.
Why is Norton not saying what services are necessary for an installationor what's wrong that there's always an error message?
Now I'm working with another antivirus SW and Win Firewall. Norton comes into the trashbasket !!
Money for nothing.
I never will buy a Norton product again !!
It's unbelievable that Norton can't help.
Are there just stupid supporters who do not know their product, i think so.
Sorry for my frustration
Bye
Werner

Sorry for your furstration and the delay in answering you. This is a user to user Forum and sometimes we get busy with life outside the Forum.
You have Norton AntiBot installed which will interfere with N360 v3 installation. Also, is your OS a different language from English (US English)? There seems to be some miss- matching on the drivers section of the GMER log that would indicate a language base issue.

Hi Zippianer,
Norton 360 v3 requires the following system services:
- PlugPlay
- RPCSS
- TermService
You can query for each of these services by running the following command in a DOS window:
sc qc <service name>

Chandy

Antibot is deinstalled now.
All services are started RPCSS, PLugPlay and TermService !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But no chance to install Norton 360 !!
Thanks guys for your asistance and help, but I forget now Norton !
If Norton is not able to explain why there's no way to install, that's poor !!
I installed now Tuneapp Utilities, Antivir and some other security programs without any installation problems.
Finally I can say Norton 360 is trash and now past for me, money for nothing !!
Thanks again
Regards
Werner
