Norton 360

My Norton 360 V3 takes a full 5 minutes for starting up at reboot. I have spysweeper and no other anti-virus or spyware programs running on my machine. I have scanned my laptop for virus and spyware with 360 and spysweeper and found nothing. I have a ASUS laptop with XP pro SP3 loaded. The machihne does load up normal with other processes and programs, the CPU spikes up (with the ccSVcHst on system)to 50% and then stays at that level for atleast a 5 full minutes. Then it appaers on the system tray confirming that it has been loaded. During that time the machine almost freezes up and trying to open any application is a futile excercise. 

Once loaded the machine and 360 V3 are quite normal except both are probably a tad slow. 

I have been browing this forum and reading the relvenat (there seems to be quite a few) articles on this issue. While there has been one email where a Norton techie (anubhav sawant) has asked a lot of questions and given a lot of insrtuctions there deos not seem to be any closure to the problem in that thread. 

Is this a problem with 360 V3? Is Norton doing something about this?Can someone please help me with this issue?

Was Spysweeper on the system before N360 v3?  Did you upgrade from v2 to v3 or just start off with v3?  N360 v3 does not like Spysweeper.  Can you uninstall Spysweeper (if you installed it after N360 v3) and see if that helps?  Have you tried to turn the backup in N360 off and see if that makes a difference?

Why oh why oh why do people still say on here to uninstall Spysweeper amongst other programs when the problem is obviously Norton whether 360 or NAV or NIS and it's time for Norton to sort it out!!!!!

Almost every forum topic on this subject goes very quiet when anybody mentions that the solution is in the hands of Norton and not uninstalling well respected programs from other Security providers.

To rravir - I will look for a suggestion by a Webroot engineer and post it again on here, it does not completely solve the problem but it may help. Webroot have at least made an effort to help in this matter!

I have stopped allowing Spysweeper to start on boot up and start it manually after my laptop has started up.

However, I posted on a similar subject many months ago also pointing out that since installing Norton 360 on both my laptop and my fathers laptop they start up more slowly. What nobody seems to understand is that my father had no other security products on his laptop other than Norton at the time I installed it so although Spysweeper and Norton may have slight problems it is NOT solely related to that nor any other Security program.

I have found the piece I posted before and it is copied here, as I say it is not the whole solution but it may help.

This is a copy of the latest email I've received:

Hi Michael,
I supposed this is part of the Symantec tamper protection (self protection - both of our software have introduced security mechanism to prevent other software to inject coding). See image1 that shows that all messages are coming from this particular area.

Please do the following.

Open Spy

sweeper and disable the email attachment shield (you don't need it, as the emails are already scanned by Norton - in case some sort of malware will go thru, the other shields of Spysweeper will prevent this to be executed).

In the Home Page of Spysweeper, please press the following keys on the keyboard simultaneously: [ctrl]+[alt]+[shift]+S. A set of hidden buttons should appear. Please click on [Turn SPS Off] (the caption should now change to Turn SPS on.

Now open Norton 360. Go to Settings -> Antivirus -> [Scan and Settings].
In the Exclusions/Low Risk section, click on [Configure] next to
Under Auto Protect Exclusion add the \Program Files\Webroot directory.

Please let me know if you are still encountering the same issues.

I will ask for the logs just in this case.

Thank you guys for taking time to post your inputs here. I must say that i totally agree with michaelsalis. Why should 2 well reputed and popular programs have this dislike of each other and why should the poor user be left to show the red flag to one of them.

Out of frustration i decided to do the on-line chat support with Norton. After 2 hours of waiting to get in topuch with a techie and after 3 hours of him playing with my computer (thru remote login) we did the reinstall of 360 and it boots up okay now. Interstingly the exe file of 360 V3 which he used for the reinstall is very different (in size as well as icon) from the one that you buy - retail or online.

dbrisendline : thank you for posting the tips on making spysweepr and 360 work together. It makes a lot of sense and i have made the changes and all seems ok.

Thanks for your message, the credit goes to the Webroot engineer whose name I included as it was part of his email to me but removed this time by a moderator which I just copied from my last post.

As I said I do start Spysweeper manually now but Norton takes a while to start itself any way so I don't know if it makes a great deal of difference and when I run it together with Norton the laptop is ok.

Some will say you can't run both as it will make your computer insecure because of the way they work but I have had assurances from both Norton and Webroot staff that Security of your computer will not be affected but there may be some slowdown in perfpormance.

I have had no problem since deciding to run both.
