I have used the removal tool several times, also live support did this, then he completely removed all of Norton 360 and did a new installation, I have 360 6.0.14 installed. The last time it ran for several hours before it froze up my computer, my status says I have never run a backup, but the storage online is less now.

I read your first post a little too quickly and I now see your trouble seems to be in backing up, not the scan.
You may have a problem with your hard drive. This can stall a scan or backup when Norton is trying to read a file that has some problem.
To check your hard disk, click on the Windows Start button. In the search box type CMD. Right click on cmd.exe and click on run as administrator. In the command prompt type "chkdsk c: /r" without the quotes. A message will come up asking if you want to check the disk on the next restart. Answer 'Y'. Reboot and the check disk will run before Windows starts up. This check will check the file system as well as the physical disk surface. This scan can take a long time, depending on the size of your hard drive.
Let us know what the scan finds.

HI - Over the last couple of weeks, since I got the new version of NOrton 360, my computer has been freezing. I believe it does this while Norton 360 is doing its background checks.
I performed all the scans suggested on the Norton website - no virusess or other problems. I have updated all Microsoft windows updates. I have the latest version of Norton. I tried the turning off all non-microsoft systems at start up, other than Norton 360. It was freezing with only Norton running. I was unable to disable Norton at start up to text it without. However, after uninstalling Norton, Word worked just fine without freezing.
I have removed and reinstalled Norton twice now, with initial improvement. The first time the improvement only lasted a couple of hours. The second time, today, it has started freeziran Norton Auto fix, a problem was identified, I rebooted and it said that it was fixed, but it is freezing again, albeit less that the two or three times a minute yesterday.
I have diabled Google and ASK toolbars. I am not using Internet Explorer as my browser. I have nominated Firefox as my browser, as the notes said that it was compatible with Norton.
Any ideas, or do I just scrap Norton and try another package?
Thanks.

Try the chkdsk scan suggested in the post above yours. These freezes can indicate a problem with the Windows file system or the physical hard disk.

HI - Thanks for your response. I have run the chkdsk c:/r on the computer.
There were no obvious issues identified on screen. In Stage 1 zero bad files were processed, and no other comments in the other 4 stages. There was a very very brief message that "Windows has made corrections" before it started the computer. As the computer was then freezing when I was entering my password to log on, and again before I had opened any applications, I restarted the computer.
I checked the size of the Hard Disk. Previously it said 109 GB free, now it says 100 GB free. So, something has definitely changed.
So far it has been freezing a lot - 4 or 5 times while I have been typing this reply.
So, I will try Norton remove and reinstall again. Any other ideas?

Do you now or have you ever had another security program on your computer? If so, you will have to remove it with the removal tool for that program.
If that is not the issue, you should try a more thorough reinstall using the Norton Removal Tool
Download the Norton Removal Tool from here www.norton.com/nrt
If you use Identity Safe, backup/export your data.
Run the Norton Removal Tool.
Reboot.
Log into your Norton Account from here www.account.norton.com
Click on the Download button beside your current product subscription. This will download and install a preactivated copy of your product.
Run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available.
Import your Identity Safe data.
See if this helps.

Hi - thanks for you response. I have run the remove and reinstall program (NRnR.exe) and as previously, it is working at the moment. I need to do some work, so I will try this for at least a few hours.
I don't think that I have ever had another security program - I certainly have only run the Symantec Norton since April 2008. I can't remember back further than that!
One other question - would I know if I am running Identity Safe? I don't think that I am but how do I check?
If it starts freezing again, I will follow your suggestion and let you know. Thanks again.

Identity Safe is an integral part of N360, so you do have it. But, if you are asking this question, you probably have not used it so you do not need to do the backup and restore of that data, because there will be no data.
The NRnR tool does not thoroughly remove everything from Norton, so it can leave behind some settings or files that may be causing your problem. The NRT does remove everything related to your 360 and gives you a fresh start.
Keep us informed.

Hi. I have just run the removal tool, and reinstalled Norton 360. It is still freezing. That's another hour wasted. The whole thing is a complete waste of time. All that I want to do is use the computer to do some work in Mocrosoft word and I can't type a document or an email without it freezing. It has frozen three times in typing this small amount of text. I can't listen to any music because of the very very regular freezing.
I have not enabled either of the Norton add ons.
Unless you can suggest anything else, I guess that I get rid of Norton completely and switch on the microsoft firewall until I can find another product.

Did you happen to try any of your tasks between when you ran the removal tool and reinstalling Norton? Was it still freezing?
Try disconnecting from the internet by pulling your ethernet cable or turning off your Wifi.
Right click on the Norton icon in the system tray and disable Smart Firewall and Anti Virus Auto Protect. Accept a 15 minute temporary time for the disable.
Now try typing a Word document, playing music and any other task you can do without the internet to see if it is still freezing.
If it is, and you are talking about removing Norton anyway, go ahead and remove it again. Then try your tasks to see if they still freeze. It is possible that there is a Windows issue causing this.
Another possibility is if your previous version of 360 was not causing this issue, you could always install the previous version to test again. Let me know if you wish to try that and I will get you a link to the file.
