When you reloaded Windows on your HP, did you leave off any HP drivers, or did you do the HP recovery installation?

The sheer number of posts for this error (8504,104 versions 4 to 6) & the repetition of steps to resolve the issue suggests that Symantec/Norton do not have a clue and that the product is, in fact, 'not fit for purpose'.
Personally, I have encountered this error too many times to keep count & have uninstalled/reinstalled N360 an equally high number of times, to no avail.
The most recent occurrence led me to what seemed like a new set of steps to 'fix' the issue - but sadly this also failed, pretty much at the first hurdle - having followed the steps to use the Norton Power Eraser, this tool failed to start after the reboot, leaving me no option but to 'disable' the rootkit scan & run the tool manually.
On completion, a list of 'possible' causes was presented, but the 'Fix' button was not available (faded out), again leaving me no alternative but to perform a 'cloud scan' on each item, one at a time, none of which turned out to be a real threat/issue.

i've been posting about this problem(8504,104) since the middle of april when i upgraded from nis2011 to nis2012. xpsp3,ie8 it started when i ran a manual live update. first time auto fix suggested to run npe(i did not run npe) and then reported failed fix-internet connectivity-host file cleanup(this still shows if i run support). the next three times this happened auto did nothing and norton quit working. i was lucky because turning off the machine, waiting 5 minutes, then rebooting seems to have fixed it. knock on wood i've not had a problem since but i'm seeing more post about these error codes and it looks like varying issues seem to trigger it. there seems to be a minor bug in norton 2012. with live update failed to complete and 8504 error codes???

Did you followed the steps to reset the registry?
If the answer is no, please do. If yes please post a screenshot.
Also, Open run(win key + r) --> type msconfig --> startup (tab) --> remove the check mark next to all the items --> restart and check.
