I'm a new user and apologise in advance if this question has been asked elsewhere. I did a quick search but couldn't find anything like my problem :(
I have a Toshiba laptop whch is running Windows 7. The computer came with Norton 360 as a trial, and when the trial expired I renewed it. I havn't had any issues with it, it seems to be working (to the untrained eye at least). I do scans every now and then and it usually finds spyware (though after visiting a few shady sites I was surprised that it didnt find any...)
My computer has an Action centre that gives you alerts when something is not functioning correctly, and an important one has flagged saying "Virus Protection (Important) Norton 360 reports that it is turned off".
When I click the 'Turn on now' button, a pop up asks 'Do you want to run this program? You should only run programs that come from publishers you trust." I click the 'Yes, I trust the publisher and want to run this program' button and it takes me to Norton program menu page. PC Security, Identity Protection and PC Tuneup are all green and say 'Protected'. I have chosen to have Back up disabled.
What I am trying to find out is if my Toshiba Action Centre is having a hissy fit and worrying about nothing, or do I have a virus that has turned Norton off, but is indicating that it is still working? Is there a way of checking 100% for sure that Norton is working?
Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm pretty terrible with computers...
Thanks in advance! :)

The instructions in that post appeared to work for me, I no longer have the Action centre telling me Norton is turned off!
Thank you so so much, much appreciated!!
