Norton 360 v. 5 is buggy and unreliable

I updated to Norton 360 v. 5 last September on my desktop computer with Vista and it has been an inconsistent, error prone problem from the start.  LiveUpDate works sometimes and sometimes it freezes my internet feed until I reboot.  And most maddening of all, there is no consistent pattern as to when or how the freeze up will occur.  When I ask the computer to analyze the problem, it tells me that a program called "Symantic Outbound Connect V4 Callout" needs to be adjusted.  I can't find such a program anywhere.  Secondly the Identity Protection Routine will work for a while and then quit working.

In desperation I used the Symantic cleaning tool to clean out all Symantic files, ran an independent registry cleanup program and Vista clean up program, and then reloaded Norton 360 v. 5 again.  Worked quite well for 10 days and then began the same problem all over again.

Looks like I will have to write off this investment and find a program from another company.  I've been a faithful Norton customer for over 10 years; but no more.

Re: Norton 360 v. 5 is buggy and unreliable

Please give some of the experts and Norton Staff here a chance to help you get this working right.

To get you the best advice, would you give us some more information about your system:

What version of Windows (OK you said VISTA) are you using including Service Packs and whether 32 bit or 64 bit as well as the Version ID of the Norton product that you are using -- Help or Support / About is where that is, in the format of nn.nn.nn.nnn where n is a number.

Please also say what internet browser you are using -- name and version number ...

The Service pack information is important -- pressing WINKEY + Pause keys at the same time will take you to the System Information asked for -- since I've seen a couple of recent cases where the users had stopped with VISTA Service Pack 1 and upgrading to SP 2 fixed their problems in both cases.

"needs to be adjusted"?  What program is telling you that?  "adjusted" how?

Re: Norton 360 v. 5 is buggy and unreliable

As to the info to questions in the first response:  my VISTA operating system is Home Premium 32 bit with Service Pack 2; the Norton 360 program ID is 5.1.0.29, and my Internet Explorer Version ID is 9.0.8112.16421.

After I had completely uninstalled Norton 360 v. 5, I ran Advanced Registry Optimizer and Advanced Vista Optimizer v. 2009, then reinstalled Norton 360 v. 5.  It worked great for about a week and then began to disintegrate.  With my last iteration of a Norton security suite I ran those two programs all the time with no problems.  Why would there now be a problem with Norton 360 v. 5?

Re: Norton 360 v. 5 is buggy and unreliable

Last night (12/18/11) I uninstalled Norton 360 v. 5 using Norton's uninstaller and then I re-installed Norton 360 v. 5.  Right now (12/19/11) as of 2:30 pm everything seems to be working fine.  I will not not run the two computer maintenance programs for the next month.  If the Norton program stays stable over that period, I will uninstall those computer maintenance programs.  If it doesn't stay stable, then we will have to look further.

Re: Norton 360 v. 5 is buggy and unreliable

Leeh,

That sounds like a wise solution .... I've never trusted those robots to mess with my Registry unless they tell me what they intend to do and why and give me the opportunity to tell them not to ... which means that I need to know more than the robot does and I'm not sure about that always so I play it safe and leave the registry alone unless I have a specific and informed reason to change something.

Look forward to hearing from you about how the test goes.

Re: Norton 360 v. 5 is buggy and unreliable

Hugh, I have bad news.  Norton 360 v. 5 worked ok for several hours while I was using the computer; however, I left the computer for about 30 minutes to do something else w/o shutting it down.  When I came back Windows Explorer 9 was locked up and would not reconnect with the Internet.  All lights on the modem were normal.  When I ran the Explorer problem solving routine, it referenced the Symantic program I mentioned in my original Messsage and said something about a Firewall preventing the connection.  I am back to squre one.  In the meantime I have not used either "cleaner" program mentioned above.

Re: Norton 360 v. 5 is buggy and unreliable

I'll ask for some help on this to see if anyone has any experience of this and what might be triggering the Firewall, if that is the actual cause .... Windows does not always use the words in their usual meanings!

Do hang on for a while ....

Meanwhile you could try the RESET button on Internet Explorer -- should be on the menu bar under Tools / Internet Options / Advanced if it's the same as in IE 8. It often cures things by eliminating add-ons which you can then bring back in until you identify the trigger.

Hi

   Goto run(Win key + r) -> devmgmt.msc->View ->show hidden devices->Non-Plug and play drivers->Please post a screenshot of that page

And please answer this question asked in the previous thread

Re: Norton 360 v. 5 is buggy and unreliable

I was able to get to the site you directed me to.  However, I am not sure how to do a screen shot of that page.  How do I do that once I get to that site?

Also, with respect to your other question, when Windows Explorer 9 fails to connect to the Internet, it asks if I wish to activate a diagnostic routine.  When I activate that routine, the answer I get back references the Symantic program listed above in earlier emails and says it needs to be adjusted.  However, it doesn't say where that program can be accessed or exactly what adjustment is called for.
