Norton 360 v2 hypothetical restore question.

hypothetical situation...

I made a backup to an external hard drive.  I took the external hard drive off site.  My computer gets stolen!  I purchase a new computer and want to restore some of my files from the external hard drive.  How can this be done?  Currently when I browse out to the external hard drive all I see is many folders named {0 - {9 and {A - {F and inside these folders are files with very long and weird file names.

Thanks,

Good and interesting question. I will refrain from giving a hypothetical answer <g>

Do you mean when browsing out from an installation of N360 or using the normal Windows Explorer?

When you say Browse that carries a connotation of networks etc -- this is not a network drive is it? How is it connected to the PC?

Re: Norton 360 v2 hypothetical restore question.

The present method for restoring files both from Online backup as well as local backups in v2 is through N360. If your computer was stolen, after you got back from the police station you would presumably swing by your local computer shop and grab a new machine. Since you want to make sure your new system is protected from virii you would want to get Norton 360 on there ASAP so you would go to our website and download a copy and use your existing license to re-activate it (if you have trouble locating your license you can view your account details online). Once you have reinstalled N360 you are able to restore your files via the N360 restore interface.

There will be an easier way to do this in the future, but for the time being you will need N360 to access your files. We will make sure you get your files back no matter what so if you had any difficulties our support staff is only a phone call or a couple mouse clicks (on your new computer!) away.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the details.

AMOI if he had the N360 CD is it one you can boot up to and run to restore files without first installing on a PC?

No, the N360 CD isn't bootable. At present you need to reinstall the N360 client in order to recover files from a backup.

Re: Norton 360 v2 hypothetical restore question.

So Scott, are you saying that only the exisiting license will work to restore it?  If I for example had a friend with N360 v2, I couldn't take my external hard drive to their house and restore my files?

Thanks,

Re: Norton 360 v2 hypothetical restore question.

No, not necessarily. I was simply pointing out that your existing N360 license is still perfectly valid and if you happen to have used up all 3 of your installs a call to customer support I believe can get the stolen license cleared off so you could install it again.

In theory you should be able to restore the data via your friend's N360 just as easily. I have not personally ever attempted this so I can only tell you what I understand of the process.

Re: Norton 360 v2 hypothetical restore question.

Sorry huwyngr, I forgot to answer your questions you asked me...

<< Do you mean when browsing out from an installation of N360 or using the normal Windows Explorer? >>

Windows Explorer is what I used.  No it's not a network drive, just an external Seagate Free Agent 320GB drive.  Sorry my browse term threw you.  I guess I should have said "Currently when I EXPLORE out to the external..."
