Norton 360 version 3 won't run--2nd time in 2 months use

I've used Norton for years and have felt that it has been very useful and kept me safe. For the last several months it has been extremely frustrating. Last fall I had NIS 2009 installed for about 9 months with no problem when it suddenly wouldn't run.  After using the Removal Tool and reinstalling, it was fine....for a few weeks before it happened again. And again.  It was suggested that I upgrade (free) to NIS 2010 for the remainder of my subscription.  The new version worked fine, but only used it for about a month.  Then I found 360 on sale as my subscription was about to expire and decided to buy that instead.  (I have the version for 3 PC's and no problems on the other two--although they are only used a couple of times a week.)

Now that Norton 360 has, for the 2nd time in 2 months,  left me running bare on the Internet (with no warning until I  notice it isn't running),  I am about to look for another program if this can't be resolved.  I've run the Removal Tool and reinstalled so many times now that I have it down pat.  (Run it twice, then reinstall.)  However, that takes an hour or more of my time including that plus downloading the megabytes of updates and configuring the program.  And then it tells me I have no backups, so there's that as well.

I'm running XP Pro, SP3, and Norton 360 3.8.0.41.  Is there a solution so that I don't have to go through this again????

Otherwise, I need to find a program that will keep me safe (not leave me bare) and that I don't have to remove & reinstall once a month.  This is ridiculous!  Can anyone help?

Re: Norton 360 version 3 won't run--2nd time in 2 months use

Hello Carolyn129

Do you have any other real time security programs running?  Your problem may be caused by a conflict with another full time scanning program or it might be due to some malware on your computer. Would you please post a HiJackThis log for us.?

Please download HiJackThis from http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/ Choose the executable and save it on your desktop. Run the file and select the first option on the main menu "Do a system scan and save a log file". When this is finished, Notepad will open with the log file in it. Save the log file and attach it to a post here via the Add Attachments Please don't attempt to fix anything that it shows until someone checks out the log. Thanks.

I have Spyware Doctor running, but it is also on the other two computers that don't have a problem. (Or maybe they don't have a problem because they're not used so often.)

I've run HiJackThis and am attaching the log file. Thanks.

Re: Norton 360 version 3 won't run--2nd time in 2 months use

Hello Carolyn129

Spyware Doctor is a real time scanning security program, so that will conflict with any Norton product. I see you have McAfee installed also. That will most likely conflict with Norton also. Which System Works are you running? Is that the basic version? I don't know about the other things you have running.

Re: Norton 360 version 3 won't run--2nd time in 2 months use

It has been my understanding that you can run another spyware program, such as Spyware Doctor,  but not another anti-virus, which SD is not.  Spyware Doctor runs on my other two computers along with 360, and they seem to be compatible.  No problems on the other two.

The McAfee program is the SiteAdvisor.  It just advises on safe web sites when I do a search.  I know that 360 does that, but I was already using SiteAdvisor when I installed 360.  Sometimes one will give me a site warning that the other doesn't.  But this McAfee is not an antivirus or even a scanner.  It is also on the other computers with no problem.

Norton SystemWorks is the Premier 2006 version 9.0. I did a custom install that includes ONLY Norton Utilities and Ghost. (I can't install Ghost without using SysWorks.)  This is also on the other computers, but I think it is a full install with the antivirus disabled.

It is very puzzling, as well as frustrating.
