Norton Internet Prevention add-on Conflict with IE8

I have been experiencing IE8 problems due to the Norton Internet Prevention add-on.

Running Norton Security Suite Ver 4.3.0.5 (Comcast) on Win 7 32 bit and IE8.

The Internet Prevention add-on (9.1.2.0) prevents iexplore.exe process instances from closing when the browser is closed.  Multiple browser windows/tabs results in multiple process instances remaining running.  This results in IE8 becoming unresponsive, and either not opening new windrow/tabs, or conversely not closing currently open windows/tabs.

Disabling the Norton Internet Prevention add-on in Internet Explorer resolves all problems and restores normal operation of IE8.

I just wasted time with "Live Chat", wherein Analyst Santhosh suggested running Live Update, and/or removing the product and reinstalling from the Comcast website.   Of course, these recommendations failed to resolve the problem, which is clearly a conflict between the Norton Internet Prevention add-on and Internet Explorer (and I am guessing that this affects all versions of IE and all versions of Windows)..

I had originally posted this to an existing thread in the Norton Internet Security/Antivirus forum, but a poster remarked that the Comcast Norton Security Suite is addressed here;  hence the "move"..

Re: Norton Internet Prevention add-on Conflict with IE8

Same thing happened to me. I have IE8 & Norton 360 Premier Edition Version 3.8.0.41 on Vista. When I tried to open more than 1 tab, and then closed one of the tabs, IE crashed every time.

I found a temporary solution - to disable the Norton toolbar and than enable it again. Still, this does not work on my other PC, where I have windows 7 & Norton 360 Premier Edition Version 4.3.0.5 !!!

I'm sorry for the trouble this is causing you.

The "IPS" team is looking into this issue. We will update this thread when we have more information.

Thanks,

Dave

I too started to see this problem this morning 11/24/2010. Have never had a problem before. Disabling Symentec Intrasion Prevention clears up the problem.

Runing Version 9.1.2.0 11-16-2009. Another computer runing Version 9.0.5.0 8-22-09 is not have the problem.

Re: Norton Internet Prevention add-on Conflict with IE8

I am having the same problem with the Norton add-in for IE8. It started this morning about 9 am (11-24-10).

Disable the IE8 add in and the problems went away.

I have the same problem. Thought it was my PC. Will try some of the suggestions other peoples on the board used.

Ditto. Just helped troubleshot a Win7-64 machine with this exact problem. Narrowed it down to SIP. Disabled it and the IE8 returned to normal operation. The bug also prevents desktop icons from working (the desktop becomes like static wallpaper). The machine was running the latest Comcast branded version on N360.

PS - SIP is Symantec Intrusion Prevension.

Also, the latest version of SIP being used in NIS does not appear to have the same problem if the machine I am on now is any indication.

Re: Norton Internet Prevention add-on Conflict with IE8

Seem to have developed same problem today when running IE8 and vista home premium.  As this only started in last 24 hours has the MS update KB2447568 got anything to do with it as the problem only started when this was automatically installed in the last 24 hours?  MAy be a red herring but then again????
