System : Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit Version
Norton 360 v 4.2
Norton cannot be started.
No other av. Software is installed or was installed on the machine.
I tried to reinstall Norton trough Add / Remove Programs and could start it once. After I run the first Live Update and restarted the PC, it failed me again.
The problem is, I cannot run the Removal Tool, it doesn't start. I see the "extracting" screen and it dissappears in the Background.
I see the SymNRT process running, but nothing happens. Tried to kill the Process and reinstall NRT but failes me over and over again.
Usually NRT creates a registry entry in HKLM : Software : SYMNRT .... but this is also not available...
would be grateful about any further Tips :)
further Steps tried: booted in Safe Mode, but still cannot run the Removal Tool.
sfc /scannow - no results found
full sys scan - nothing found

Hi Dallas_maverick,
Restart the computer 3-4 times, and then try to download a fresh copy of the Norton Removal Tool to your desktop. Right-click on the Norton Removal Tool, and select Run as Administrator. Wait for few minutes as sometimes it may get delayed more than expected to initialize and run.

hi Yogesh,
I experienced a delayed start of the NRT with Windows XP. But here my problem is from another nature. In Windows Vista and 7 it just disappears in the Background and nothing happens, I could wait for hours.
the PC was restarted about 10 times and had no results in normal or safe mode. The "run as admin" option is what i tried first. UAC is also turned off.
What could possbily block the start of the tool ?

I also faced a similar problem now when I checked the Norton Removal Tool in one of my test machines. I was able to run it by following these steps:
- Right-click on Norton icon in system tray; and disable the Auto-Protect and Firewall.
- Restart the computer to Safe Mode through msconfig(System Configuration Utility)
- Right-click on the Norton Removal Tool and select Run as Administrator.
If the problem persists, you can first try uninstalling via Programs and Features in the Control Panel. Then try running the Norton Removal tool.

hi yogesh,
- tried the steps as you suggested, no success
- Norton cannot be removed trough Control Panel in Normal Mode
- booted and removed Norton from Safe Mode
- rebooted again
- still not able to run the Removal Tool
- killed Removal Tool Process with taskkill /im symnrt.exe /f
- still not able to run Removall Tool
- removed Norton Registry keys.... HKLM : Software : Norton and HKCU : Software : norton and symantec ( you know other registry eintries that are important? )
will try to reinstall Norton, let's hope for better luck now

Please try booting into Safe Mode, and search and delete folders (not just registry keys) containing the names "Norton" and "Symantec".
Ladies and Gentlemen, we are now ready for take-off. We would like to remind you that smoking and flaming are prohibited on all boards of this forum. We wish you an enjoyable flight with Norton Airlines.

hi yaso, hi yogesh, thanks again
after the last sweaty part i was able to reinstall and start Norton without running the removal tool. I scanned this PC with Norton and Malwarebytes, no virus was found, let's hope it will remain like this.
please forward this issue, the NRT needs a review, why I couldn't run it, will remain a mistery ...
